Custom URL schemes use app-defined addresses such as example://products/123 without that website-ownership check. For links to a site the app publisher controls, Android recommends App Links: verified matching links can open the app directly, while the same web address can still lead to the site if the app is not installed.
What distinguishes an App Link from a custom scheme?
Both are ways to route a person to specific content in an app, so both can be described as deep links. The difference is the address format and the trust relationship behind it.

Android describes App Links as verified deep links to a developer’s website. Its guidance recommends them for links to the app publisher’s own site: Create deep links.
How App Link verification works
Verification joins a website address to a particular Android app. The app declares the relevant HTTP or HTTPS hosts in its manifest and marks the intent filter with android:autoVerify="true". Each declared host must publish a Digital Asset Links statement at https://<hostname>/.well-known/assetlinks.json. That statement identifies the app and its signing-certificate fingerprint.

When Android verifies the association, a matching link can be routed to the app as the trusted handler instead of asking the user to choose between competing apps. Verification applies to the declared host and URL matching rules; it is not a blanket endorsement of every URL or action the app might receive.
Host and Android-version considerations
- Use the exact hostnames declared in the app manifest when publishing and checking the association file. A redirect, including HTTP-to-HTTPS or non-www-to-www, can cause verification to fail.
- On Android 11 and earlier, verification fails if even one declared host cannot be verified. Android 12 and later attempts to verify each host independently, so a verified host can become the default handler even if another host fails.
- Test verification and routing on the oldest Android versions the app supports; host configuration and platform behavior affect the result.
What changes with Dynamic App Links?
Dynamic App Links are available from Android 15 (API level 35) on supported devices with Google services. They let a website’s Digital Asset Links configuration refine path, query, fragment, and exclusion behavior without requiring a new app release. Server-side rules can narrow or refine the scope declared in the app manifest, but cannot expand beyond that static scope.

Android 14 and earlier do not apply these advanced server-side rules in the same way. If an app relies on Dynamic App Links, test behavior on older supported releases rather than assuming they will honor the same rules.
When should you choose a custom URL scheme?
A custom scheme can make sense when an app needs an app-specific URI that is not a link to a publisher-controlled website. It may also be used alongside web links where a particular integration requires that URI format. The trade-off is that a scheme does not establish domain ownership: another app can register the same scheme, and users may need to select a handler or manage a default.

Because a custom URI is not a website address, plan a separate fallback for people who do not have the app. Do not assume the custom link will automatically open equivalent web content.

For App Links
- Declare the HTTP or HTTPS schemes, hostnames, and matching URL patterns in the app’s intent filter, with
android:autoVerify="true". - Publish a valid Digital Asset Links JSON file at
/.well-known/assetlinks.jsonon each declared hostname. Ensure its app identity and signing-certificate fingerprint match the app. - Check that each exact host serves the file without redirecting, then verify the association and test the matching links on the Android versions you support.
- Handle the incoming intent data in the app: parse the destination and route to the intended content.
Android Studio’s App Links Assistant can help create intent filters, map URLs to activities, and check mappings. It is an implementation aid, not a substitute for correctly handling incoming intent data.

For either link type
Validate the URI, its parameters, and the requested action before using them. Verification helps prevent other apps from intercepting a publisher’s website links, but it does not make incoming values trustworthy or eliminate the need for input validation.
