If you publish on Google Play, sign in to Play Console now and check two separate statuses: whether your developer account is identity-verified and whether each app’s package name is registered. Google’s package-registration help page set September 30, 2026 as the deadline for all Play packages; that date has passed. Google says it attempts automatic registration, so do not assume every app missed the deadline or has already been removed—check the notices and status for each app, then follow any remaining console instructions promptly.

Identity verification establishes who is behind the developer account. Package-name registration associates an app’s package with its signing key. Both matter, but completing one does not complete the other.

What to check first in Play Console

  1. Review the developer account’s identity status. Check the Play Console Home page and account verification prompts. Google says developers who successfully verified their identity previously do not need to repeat that verification.
  2. Check package registration app by app. Google’s package-registration guidance says notices appear on the Play Console Home page and that individual app status is available on the Android developer verification page. Follow any action shown for an unregistered package rather than relying on automatic registration.
  3. Use the exact instructions and deadlines shown for your account. Google describes account-specific deadlines for some legacy developer accounts, including a 60-day start window and a possible 90-day extension. Those terms should not be assumed to extend the separate package-registration deadline; rely on the notice for your account and app.

Google’s package-registration instructions say unregistered apps will be removed from Play. Since the stated September 30, 2026 deadline has passed, treat any outstanding status as urgent and resolve it through Play Console.

Prepare identity verification for the right account type

Google Play offers Personal and Organization developer accounts. Choose the type that accurately represents the publisher; the type affects the details and documents Google may request. Google requires an Organization account for financial products and services, health apps, apps approved for VpnService, and government apps.

Requirement Personal account Organization account
Typical fit Individual projects, such as student, hobbyist, or amateur development Business, professional, commercial, or governmental activity
Identity evidence if the linked payments profile is not verified Government identity document Identity document for an authorized representative, plus official organization proof
Organization record Not applicable D-U-N-S number; registration name must match the Dun & Bradstreet profile
Website association Not listed as an Android Developer Console identity requirement for personal accounts Verify website ownership through Google Search Console association
Categories requiring this account type Not suitable for Google’s specified regulated and government categories Required for financial services, health apps, VpnService apps, and government apps

Check your payments profile and documents

For every account: make the linked profile accurate

Google uses the linked Google payments profile to represent the developer’s real-world identity. Confirm that its legal name and address are current and accurate before submitting verification information. The details should align with the records Google asks you to provide.

For a Personal account

If the payments profile is not already verified, Google may request an official government identity document. Accepted document types vary by country or region, so consult Google’s current country-specific document list rather than assuming a particular ID will qualify.

For an Organization account

Be ready to provide the organization’s D-U-N-S number, official organization documentation, and identity documentation for someone authorized to act for it if the linked payments profile is not verified. Check the existing Dun & Bradstreet record first: large organizations may have more than one D-U-N-S record, and Google says the business registration name must match the Dun & Bradstreet profile.

Google says unsupported documentation is the primary reason for developer verification failures. Use the accepted document types and ensure names and organization details match. Google says applying for a D-U-N-S number is free; its help pages estimate that obtaining one may take up to 28 or 30 days. Allow time for the record to be established and avoid paying a third party simply to submit a free application.

Keep contact details and website access ready

  • Email and phone: Keep the contact email address and phone number operational and accessible to the account owner or a shared team inbox. Google verifies these channels using a one-time code.
  • Organization website: Android Developer Console organization accounts must associate a website whose ownership is verified through Google Search Console. If a different Google account manages the website, ask its owner to approve the association request.

Resolve an unregistered package name

Google attempts to register existing and new Play apps automatically, based on signing-key eligibility and known installs. Automatic registration is not confirmation that every package is registered: check each app’s status.

Google’s guidance gives priority to the signing key associated with more than 50% of known installs. If no key exceeds half, keys with at least 50 installs may be eligible; when no key meets that threshold, registration is first-come, first-served. Other developers may need to submit a request for the package name.

If Play Console directs you to manual registration, the process may involve adding an eligible public certificate key, signing an APK that contains a Google-provided snippet, and uploading it. If the signing key is ineligible, Google may require a request to use the package name. Follow the app-specific instructions in the console; do not change a package name reflexively, because package identity is consequential. Google advises using a new package name when there is no legitimate reason to share one.

Keep verification separate from ordinary app review requirements

Identity verification and package registration do not replace Google Play’s app review requirements. Separately, keep app information and metadata accurate, provide a privacy policy and Data safety details, and make review access work—for example, provide demo-account credentials when reviewers need them.

Do not confuse Play Console checks with Android-wide developer verification

Google describes a broader Android developer verification rollout affecting app installations on certified devices and distribution through multiple stores. Its overview names Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Transsion Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. This wider process is distinct from checking a Play Console account and registering Play package names.

Google’s overview describes an initial phase starting September 30, 2026 in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, but also refers to “these four countries.” A separate Google Play policy preview identifies Brazil as the fourth market and describes the rollout as late 2026. Because the published country count and timing are inconsistent, check Google’s live Android developer verification materials for current rollout details rather than treating the overview as a substitute for your Play Console notices.

Google says enterprise apps distributed only through an organization’s managed store on managed devices are exempt from the Android-wide rollout. It recommends registration if those apps could reach unmanaged devices or other distribution channels.
