Yes. In 2024, Mark, a 64-year-old man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), used Synchron’s investigational Stentrode brain-computer interface (BCI) to control Amazon Alexa in a clinical-trial setting. The implant decoded signals associated with his attempted movements into digital commands; it did not give him unrestricted access to his thoughts. Alexa was the consumer endpoint, not the implant.
What happened in the Alexa demonstration?
WIRED reported that Mark received a Stentrode implant in August 2023 and later used it to control Alexa. Synchron’s news index dates its announcement of the first Alexa use with a BCI to September 16, 2024. The demonstration took place as part of clinical research, not through a product anyone can buy and install at home.
The public information summarized here does not specify which Alexa commands Mark used or which individual Echo or Alexa-compatible devices he controlled. It establishes that he used the BCI to control Alexa, not a detailed list of tasks or a claim that every Alexa feature was accessible.
How does the Stentrode turn movement intent into commands?
Stentrode is an endovascular BCI: its electrode array is delivered through a blood vessel rather than placed on the brain through open surgery. Synchron describes the device as sitting inside a brain blood vessel and reading a person’s intent to move.

- A clinician delivers the stent-like electrode array by catheter through the jugular vein and positions it in a cerebral venous vessel near the motor cortex.
- When the user attempts a movement, the electrodes detect associated neural signals.
- Software decodes those signals into a limited set of digital commands, which are transmitted wirelessly to an external computer or tablet.
- The computer or tablet can then interact with software or a connected service such as Alexa.
Synchron says the procedure takes about two hours and avoids open brain surgery. That does not mean the system is non-invasive: it requires an implanted medical device and a clinical procedure.
Is this mind reading?
No. The system is intended to decode neural activity associated with attempted movement and translate it into commands. That is different from reading private thoughts, memories, or any idea a person happens to have. Descriptions such as “from thought alone” are shorthand for controlling a computer through decoded movement intent, not evidence of unrestricted thought-reading.

What else can the system control?
Synchron says Stentrode can support computer-based activities such as texting, browsing, and shopping. In the SWITCH study, all four analyzed participants with ALS were able to control a computer. These examples describe broader computer interaction; they do not establish that Mark used each activity in the Alexa demonstration.
Alexa-compatible devices, such as smart speakers, plugs, or lights, are downstream endpoints. The BCI sends commands through a computer or tablet; the Alexa device is not the implant, and the public account does not establish which smart-home functions were demonstrated.

What does the clinical evidence show?
SWITCH: early feasibility and one-year safety
The prospective first-in-human SWITCH study, published in JAMA Neurology in 2023, analyzed four participants with ALS after Stentrode implantation. Each completed 12 months of follow-up and controlled a computer. The report found no serious device-related adverse events, vessel occlusion, or device migration during that study period.
This is a small early-feasibility study. Its findings offer evidence about implantation, safety, and computer control in those participants; they do not prove broad clinical effectiveness, predict an individual patient’s outcome, or establish that the system is ready for consumer use.

A separate long-term BCI case
A separate report in the New England Journal of Medicine, published August 14, 2024, described seven years of independent at-home BCI communication by one person with advanced ALS. Reliability eventually declined as progressive oculomotor impairment worsened. This case shows that long-term communication was possible for one individual, while also illustrating that performance can change as a disease progresses. It is separate evidence and should not be mistaken for seven years of Stentrode use by Mark.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can someone buy a Stentrode implant?
No. Synchron describes its BCI system as investigational, says its clinical benefit has not been validated, and says it is not approved for commercial use in any geography. Its trial page lists studies in the United States and Australia for people with severe bilateral upper-limb motor weakness. Access is through clinical research pathways, subject to study eligibility—not ordinary retail purchase. An Amazon Echo or other Alexa-compatible device is a separate consumer product and does not provide BCI capability by itself.
