If an Airbnb host cancels a home reservation before check-in, Airbnb says you’re entitled to a full refund, including service fees. Airbnb may offer booking credit first so you can rebook quickly, but you can request the money back to your original payment method. The refund is initiated when the reservation is canceled; when it appears in your account depends on your bank or financial institution.
Does Airbnb refund you if the host cancels?
For a home reservation canceled by the host before check-in, Airbnb’s guest guidance says you are entitled to a full refund if you choose not to rebook. The Rebooking and Refund Policy for Homes, effective February 6, 2025, likewise provides for a full refund after a host cancellation before check-in.
This is different from canceling the reservation yourself. If the host cannot accommodate you, have the host cancel through Airbnb so the record reflects who canceled and Airbnb can apply the relevant policy.
Will Airbnb refund the service fee?
Yes. Airbnb’s guest-facing guidance says the full refund for a host’s pre-check-in cancellation includes service fees.

Does Airbnb refund to your card or give travel credit?
Airbnb may initially provide booking credit so you can use it to rebook immediately. You can request a refund to the original payment method instead. If you leave the credit unused, Airbnb says it will automatically refund it to that original method after 72 hours. The applicable options and next steps are shown in Airbnb’s cancellation notice.
How long does an Airbnb host-cancellation refund take?
Airbnb says it initiates the refund when the reservation is canceled. That does not mean the money will post instantly: the arrival time depends on your bank or financial institution. The official guidance does not give one universal posting time, so check with your payment provider if the refund has been initiated but has not appeared.

What if my Airbnb host asks me to cancel?
Do not cancel on the host’s behalf if the host says they cannot provide the stay. Airbnb’s Help Center guidance says, “If your host tells you they can’t accommodate your stay, don’t cancel for them.” Ask the host to cancel through Airbnb instead. If the host pressures you to cancel, or you already canceled at their request, contact Airbnb support and explain what happened.
Can Airbnb help you find another place?
Yes. You can contact Airbnb for help finding a similar home. Whether a suitable alternative is available depends on factors including location, amenities, availability, and comparable pricing; rebooking assistance is not a guarantee that a particular alternative will be found.

What changes if the cancellation happens after check-in?
The full-refund rule for a host cancellation before check-in should not be assumed to apply after the stay has begun. If a host cancels after check-in or another covered issue disrupts the stay, Airbnb may provide a full or partial refund and rebooking assistance depending on the circumstances.
For covered issues, Airbnb’s homes policy generally requires you to report the problem within 72 hours after discovering it and provide relevant evidence. The outcome can depend on the issue’s severity and impact, how much of the stay is affected, whether you leave the accommodation, mitigating circumstances, and the evidence available.

What to do when the host cancels
- Confirm who canceled. If the host cannot provide the stay, ask them to cancel through Airbnb rather than submitting a guest cancellation.
- Read Airbnb’s cancellation notice. Airbnb sends information about next steps and the refund. Follow the options shown for your reservation.
- Choose credit or a refund. If Airbnb offers booking credit, request a refund to the original payment method if you prefer money back. Unused credit is automatically refunded there after 72 hours.
- Track the payment. Airbnb initiates the refund when the reservation is canceled; check the original payment channel and allow for your financial institution’s processing time.
- Ask for rebooking support if needed. Contact Airbnb to discuss similar available homes and comparable pricing.
