The PGA TOUR introduced AI-generated, shot-by-shot commentary in TOURCAST at THE PLAYERS Championship in March 2025. The feature adds written context to shot-tracking data, helping fans follow players and moments that may not receive conventional television coverage. The TOUR has since described the feature as an ongoing part of TOURCAST.
What the AI commentary adds to TOURCAST
A basic shot result tells you what happened: for example, where a ball finished. TOURCAST’s AI commentary is designed to add why that result matters for the player and the competition. The PGA TOUR says it can describe a shot, put it in the context of the player’s performance, and note what may be coming next. The TOUR’s March 10, 2025 announcement presented the feature as a way to give fans more context across the field.
That written layer sits alongside TOURCAST’s shot tracking and other viewing information, such as shot trails, radar data, green views, and video highlights. It is an addition to the digital experience, not a replacement for a human broadcast.
Why automate commentary at THE PLAYERS
The scale of a golf tournament makes it difficult for a human production team to narrate every shot. The PGA TOUR said a tournament can involve more than 30,000 shots and up to 156 players spread across approximately 150 acres. At THE PLAYERS Championship 2025, it cited more than 30,000 shots. Those are the TOUR’s launch-era figures, and the qualifiers matter: the field is described as “up to” 156, while the shot totals are “more than” 30,000.

Scott Gutterman, the PGA TOUR’s senior vice president of digital and broadcast technologies, said the goal was to make sure every player received coverage. Speaking to Network World in April 2025, Gutterman described the approach as giving every shot commentary that includes “a fact and context.” He offered examples such as distance, comparisons with shot lengths, and proximity probabilities; these illustrate the kinds of context discussed in the interview, not a guarantee that every TOURCAST item includes each detail.
Where the shot information comes from
The PGA TOUR identifies ShotLink powered by CDW as the source of the shot data and AWS as its AI technology partner. The feature uses that data to generate written descriptions and context at a scale that would be challenging to cover manually. The TOUR’s announcement explains the intended behavior, but it does not establish an independent accuracy rating or show that every generated description is error-free.

At launch, the TOUR said fans could access the commentary in TOURCAST through its app and website. TOURCAST’s available features and exact interface can change over time, so current event access and layout should be checked in the PGA TOUR’s TOURCAST product page. In a January 14, 2026 partnership update, the TOUR continued to describe AI-driven, shot-by-shot TOURCAST commentary as part of its AWS-supported fan offering.

What fans should—and should not—expect
- More context than a score or location alone: commentary is intended to connect a shot with a player’s performance and the event situation.
- Broader coverage across the field: automation helps address the sheer volume of shots, including action that may not appear in a conventional television broadcast.
- Not a substitute for broadcast analysis: the feature supplements TOURCAST’s data and video options rather than replacing human commentary.
- No published accuracy guarantee: the TOUR announcements describe the feature’s purpose and partners, but do not provide an independent accuracy test or user-study result.
