AI search combines information retrieval with generated answers: it finds or receives relevant material, then uses a generative model to synthesize a response, often with links or citations to inspect. The steps and available sources vary by product, so there is no single pipeline shared by Google Search, ChatGPT search, Gemini grounding, and Microsoft Copilot.

How does AI search work?

A useful way to understand AI search is as a sequence of interpretation, evidence gathering, and answer generation. A particular service may repeat or rearrange these steps, and the evidence it can use depends on its product and settings.

  1. It interprets the question. A conversational query can be treated as a request for meaning and context, not just a set of exact keywords. Microsoft says Copilot Search interprets context, relationships, and meaning while also supporting traditional keyword queries (Microsoft Copilot Search).
  2. It looks for evidence. A system may retrieve pages from a search index, use a search provider, or draw on other enabled sources. Google describes its Search generative features as using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also called grounding, with core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages. It also documents query fan-out: generating related searches concurrently to find useful results (Google Search Central). OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content supplied directly by partners (OpenAI).
  3. It combines retrieved material with available context. Depending on the system, that context can include public web pages, partner content, organizational data, or files a user attaches. Microsoft identifies work data, web sources, and attached content as possible grounding sources; what is available varies with account and administrator settings (Microsoft Learn).
  4. A generative model writes a response. The model synthesizes an answer from the context it has. Google says its systems review information in retrieved pages to generate a response; Microsoft describes grounding as anchoring answers in work and real-world information. The result is a generated synthesis, not necessarily text copied from one page.
  5. The product may show links or citations. These give readers a way to inspect sources. ChatGPT search offers links and a Sources view; Gemini API grounding can return citation annotations associated with answer text (OpenAI; Gemini API documentation).

Retrieval and generation are distinct ideas, but they need not happen as one simple, one-way pass. Google’s documented query fan-out, for example, means related searches can help gather evidence before an answer is produced. Other products may use different retrieval steps or source pools.

Where do AI search answers come from?

The answer can draw on different material depending on the service and the user’s settings. “AI search” does not mean that every answer comes from the same web index, or even from the public web alone.

#1 Best Overall
  • Public web pages: Search-backed features can retrieve pages from a web index or use third-party search providers.
  • Publisher or partner material: OpenAI says ChatGPT search can use content provided directly by partners as well as third-party search providers (OpenAI).
  • Work information: Microsoft says Copilot may ground responses in organizational data, subject to account access and administrator settings (Microsoft Learn).
  • User-provided files: In products that support attachments, a file can be part of the context used to answer. Microsoft identifies attached content as one possible grounding source.

Products also make their own decisions about what and when to retrieve. Google says its systems determine when AI Overviews are useful; source availability and controls in Microsoft products can vary by subscription and administrator settings (Google; Microsoft Learn). Those differences help explain why two services—or the same service with different access—may return different answers to the same question.

Why does an AI search answer link to these sources?

Links and citations are a trail from the generated response to material the system considered relevant. Google describes prominent clickable links to pages supporting an AI-generated answer; ChatGPT search displays links and a Sources view, and Gemini API grounding can associate citation annotations with text.

A citation is useful for checking provenance, but it is not proof that the linked page supports every clause in the answer. The model has generated a synthesis, and the visible link may not make clear which exact passage supports each detail. Treat the citation as a place to begin verification, not as an automatic accuracy certificate.

Are AI search citations and summaries reliable?

They can help you find relevant material quickly, but generated answers and their citations can be incomplete, incorrect, or out of date. OpenAI warns that web citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect and notes that language models can produce fabricated citations and factual errors (OpenAI Help Center). Google says AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends checking supporting links and other results (Google Search Help). Microsoft likewise advises reviewing sources; answers can be outdated if they rely on old pages or files (Microsoft Learn).

A practical way to check an answer

  1. Open the cited page. Look for the specific claim, not merely a related topic.
  2. Check dates. For changing facts such as product features, policies, or availability, inspect the publication or update date and whether the page is still current.
  3. Compare an independent authoritative source when it matters. This is especially important for consequential decisions or claims that could have changed.

Why can different AI search tools give different answers?

Each product can have a different index or search provider, access to different partner or organizational material, retrieval behavior, settings, and answer-generation process. Microsoft explicitly notes that available sources can depend on subscription and administrator settings. Google documents its own use of query fan-out and says its systems decide when AI Overviews are useful. These product-specific details are not a universal blueprint.

Providers do not publicly disclose every ranking weight, internal prompt, or source-selection rule. Claims that there is one universal formula for getting a page cited should therefore be treated as unverified unless the particular system documents it.

What can website owners do about AI search visibility?

Eligibility is not the same as guaranteed appearance. For Google’s generative Search features, standard SEO remains relevant because the features build on core Search ranking and quality systems. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet and meet the stated conditions for those features, but it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. It recommends crawlable content and points site owners to a Search Console generative AI performance report for visibility in Search and Discover features (Google Search Central).

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says website eligibility requires allowing OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and ensuring the host or CDN permits traffic from OpenAI’s published IP addresses. Even then, placement is not guaranteed (OpenAI). These are system-specific technical eligibility conditions, not a way to force a citation or a promise that an assistant will use a page.
