AI-assisted cash-flow underwriting uses information about money moving through a business’s accounts to help estimate whether it can repay a loan. A lender may consider deposits, expenses, balances, and transaction patterns alongside conventional credit information—but there is no single standard set of inputs, and cash flow alone does not guarantee approval.
What “AI cash-flow underwriting” means
Cash-flow underwriting evaluates a business’s financial activity to help a lender judge repayment capacity. The information can range from summary figures—such as monthly net cash flow or average account balances—to transaction-level records of sales and expenditures. The Federal Reserve describes these as possible forms of cash-flow data, not a checklist used by every lender.
“AI lender” is not a precise category in the U.S. regulatory materials discussed here. Regulators address alternative data, complex algorithms, and deposit-account activity, but those sources do not establish a definitive list of lenders that use AI specifically to assess business cash flow. Some lenders may use automated analysis; the exact technology and model inputs are lender-specific.
What business cash-flow information may be considered
Depending on the lender and the data access the business authorizes, potential inputs include:
#1 Best Overall
- Manage your payments and deposit transactions
- Check balances and generate reports to monitor your business finances
- Email and fax reports to your accountant
- Create and track quotes, invoices and more
- Connect to the app with secure web access
- Monthly deposits, withdrawals, and net cash flow.
- Average balances, changes in balances, and account tenure.
- The size and regularity of deposits.
- Overdraft history.
- Sales and expenditures visible in transaction records, including activity from digital payment processors.
These are examples identified in Federal Reserve materials, not a promise that a particular lender collects or scores each item. A lender may review bank statements or permissioned account data. The source, account scope, connection method, and period reviewed depend on that lender’s request and privacy terms; there is no universal lookback period or rule that an application exposes every transaction in every business account.
How the information can affect a loan decision
1. The lender obtains financial information
The lender may ask for statements or permission to access account data. Bank statements and digital payment processors are possible sources. Before authorizing access, check which accounts and information are included, how the lender describes its use of the data, and whether you can correct inaccurate or outdated information.
2. Data are organized into cash-flow measures
A system may organize account activity into figures or patterns such as deposits, expenses, balances, and overdrafts. Some measures summarize a month; others rely on individual transactions. Federal Reserve materials compare certain cash-flow measures with familiar credit dimensions—for example, deposit patterns with payment history—but that comparison is illustrative. It does not establish that a lender uses a particular scorecard or that an algorithm interprets an individual transaction in a specific way.

3. Repayment capacity is assessed
Underwriting has long involved evaluating income and expenses to estimate whether a borrower can repay. Account activity can add information about the timing and amount of money moving through a business, potentially refining that assessment. A simple measure may have an understandable relationship to repayment capacity, while a more complex model may process many data points. The Federal Reserve, CFPB, FDIC, OCC, and NCUA have recognized cash flow derived from bank records as a form of alternative data.
4. The lender makes a decision and sets terms
Cash-flow information may contribute to an approval, denial, or loan terms, either by itself or alongside conventional credit information and other evidence. It remains one part of underwriting: it does not remove risk controls or the obligation to repay. Interagency principles for responsible small-dollar lending identify deposit-account activity as one possible input for supervised banks, savings associations, and credit unions offering loans that may have consumer or small-business purposes. Those principles are not a description of every commercial loan or nonbank lender.
Cash-flow data and traditional credit information compared
| Assessment dimension | Traditional credit information | Cash-flow information |
|---|---|---|
| Typical data | Credit-file history, such as repayment records and amounts owed. | Account summaries or transaction records showing inflows, outflows, and balances. (Federal Reserve) |
| What it can show | Past credit obligations and repayment behavior. | Business money movement and account activity during the period reviewed. |
| Data access | Uses credit-file information. | May require bank statements or permissioned access to accounts or payment-processor data; scope depends on the lender. |
| Interpretation | Credit-file measures are established underwriting inputs. | Measures may be straightforward or part of a complex model; inputs and interpretation vary by lender. |
| Limits | Does not by itself describe all current operating activity. | Can be affected by incomplete, inconsistent, or poorly structured data and may not have been tested across a full business cycle. (Federal Reserve) |
Neither approach is universally more accurate or fair. Cash-flow information can supplement a credit file, but the available regulator materials do not establish a universal winner or a guaranteed improvement for business-loan decisions.

Potential benefits—and what is not established
Regulators have said that compliant use of alternative data may improve decision speed and accuracy and help evaluate applicants who may have difficulty qualifying through mainstream credit systems. Federal Reserve discussion also describes possible benefits such as identifying applicants missed by traditional credit files and making decisions more convenient or efficient. These are potential outcomes, not promised results for a particular business applicant.

The official sources discussed here do not establish a current market-wide approval lift, default rate, pricing effect, or reliable estimate of how many lenders use AI on business cash-flow data. A lender-specific performance claim needs lender-specific evidence.
Data quality, model risk, and fairness concerns
Cash-flow analysis depends on usable data. Account access can fail, transaction data may be inconsistent or poorly structured, and third-party data can be costly. The Federal Reserve has also noted that many alternative-data models have not been tested through a full business cycle, leaving uncertainty about how they perform in an economic downturn. Applicants may not know how permissions or transaction activity influenced a decision.

In 2019, the Federal Reserve, CFPB, FDIC, OCC, and NCUA said that institutions should consider applicable consumer-protection obligations before using alternative data, supported by a well-designed compliance management program. That statement discusses possible benefits only when use is consistent with applicable law. Coverage can depend on the lender and the type of credit, so this general explanation is not a determination of any business’s legal rights.

CFPB guidance says creditors must give specific reasons for adverse action that accurately reflect the actual basis for the decision, even when complex algorithms are involved. There is no special AI exemption. This does not mean a borrower is entitled to the model’s source code or a complete technical disclosure of how it works.
Review the stated reasons and compare them with the facts in the application and account information. If something appears incorrect, ask the creditor about the underlying business or account data and how to dispute or correct it. The reasons should describe the actual basis for the decision rather than rely on a vague reference to an algorithm.

Questions to ask before sharing account data
- Which business accounts or payment-processor records will you review?
- What period of activity will you use, and are transactions or only summary figures included?
- How will the data be used in underwriting, and who can access it?
- What should I do if account information is missing, outdated, or inaccurate?
- If the application is denied, how will I receive the specific reasons?
These questions help clarify a lender’s own process; the answers should come from that lender’s application, authorization, privacy, and adverse-action materials.
How small-business data reporting fits in
CFPB Regulation B § 1002.107 concerns compiling and maintaining specified data about covered small-business credit applications, including application outcomes and other defined fields. It is reporting context—not a requirement that every lender collect transaction-level bank data, and not proof that every lender is covered. Applicability and effective requirements depend on the current rule and the institution’s circumstances.
