AI is changing API work in two ways: coding agents can help developers draft and run tests, and APIs increasingly need to be understandable and safe for agents to call. The first can speed up routine work, but developers still own test quality. The second makes clear contracts, discoverability, monitoring, and access controls more important.

What AI changes in API testing

A coding agent can turn an API requirement, specification, or code change into a first draft of test cases. It can suggest edge cases, update tests as implementation changes, and run a suite as part of an iterative coding workflow. OpenAI’s engineering guide describes these uses while stressing that developers must review generated tests for runnable, meaningful checks aligned with the specification and user experience.

That distinction matters: a test that merely confirms an endpoint returns a success status may miss a wrong response body, an authorization flaw, or a regression in behavior. AI can propose coverage; it cannot decide what the product is supposed to do or whether the assertions prove it.

A practical review workflow

  1. Give the agent a behavioral source. Provide the relevant API specification, requirement, or behavior change, along with the code or collection it should work from.
  2. Ask for cases and assertions. Request expected success behavior plus relevant invalid-input, boundary, authorization, and failure cases. These categories are practical prompts, not a universal checklist.
  3. Keep generated tests separate until reviewed. Check that assertions inspect the expected behavior rather than only confirming that a request completed.
  4. Run against a controlled environment. Use test credentials and data, and confirm the suite can distinguish a correct result from a plausible but incorrect one.
  5. Compare the tests with the contract. Review both omissions and assumptions the agent introduced; update tests where requirements or user-visible behavior demand it.
  6. Run accepted tests in CI. Keep the chosen functional and regression suite in the team’s normal build pipeline so changes are checked consistently.

OpenAI’s guide puts the human responsibility plainly: “Writing tests with AI tools doesn’t remove the need for developers to think about testing.”

From code suggestions to API workflows

Agent-assisted API work is moving beyond generating snippets. Postman describes CLI agent skills that let a coding agent discover APIs, create collections, add tests, and run API workflows from an editor. Its 2025 report also recommends running functional and regression tests in CI/CD with Postman CLI. These are vendor descriptions and recommendations, not independent evidence that generated tests are effective. See Postman and the Postman 2025 State of the API Report.

A request such as “Create a collection for the API in this repo, add tests, and run them” captures the appeal: the agent can help connect API discovery, test drafting, and execution. Teams should still review the resulting collection, assertions, environment configuration, and execution results rather than treating a successful run as proof of adequate coverage.

What the 2025 survey says—and what it does not

Postman’s 2025 report surveyed more than 5,700 developers, architects, and executives around the world. Postman is both an API-tool vendor and the publisher of the survey, so these figures describe its respondents in that year; they are not a population-wide census or proof that AI caused a particular change.

Reported finding What it indicates
89% of respondents use AI; 24% design APIs with AI agents in mind AI use is more widespread among respondents than agent-oriented API design.
81% report API testing as an activity; 73% developing; 58% documenting Testing sits within a broader set of established API tasks.
75% use CI/CD pipelines; 17% report using no monitoring tools Automation is common in the sample, while monitoring coverage is not universal.
51% cite unauthorized agent access as a top security risk This is a stated concern in the survey, not an incident rate.
70% are aware of MCP; 10% use it regularly Awareness and regular use differ substantially among respondents.
82% of organizations report some API-first adoption; 25% report being fully API-first The report distinguishes some adoption from a fully API-first approach.

All figures above are from the Postman 2025 State of the API Report. The report also says fully API-first adoption rose 12% from 2024; that is the report’s comparison, not evidence that AI alone produced the increase.

APIs now have agent consumers, too

An API built only with human developers and conventional application clients in mind may be difficult for an agent to use reliably. As APIs serve agents as well as applications and people, design and operations should account for whether an agent can:

  • Find the relevant API and distinguish it from alternatives.
  • Understand the schema, required inputs, intended use, and limits.
  • Authenticate with appropriate credentials and only the permissions its task needs.
  • Interpret errors, rate limits, and changes without silently producing a wrong result.
  • Be monitored so teams can diagnose activity and enforce access policies.

These are design questions suggested by the agent-consumer shift, not a checklist proven universal by the survey. Postman’s report presents MCP as a connective layer that can help agents discover, understand, and invoke APIs. Its figures—70% awareness and 10% regular use—show why familiarity with the concept should not be mistaken for routine adoption.

Security and governance need to keep pace

When an agent can call APIs, the important question is not just whether it can complete a task, but which data and actions its credentials permit. The Postman report’s 51% figure reflects respondents identifying unauthorized agent access as a top security risk; it does not measure the frequency of actual incidents.

For implementation, scope agent credentials to the task, separate test and production access, avoid exposing secrets in prompts or logs, and review what tools and endpoints an agent can reach. These are prudent governance measures, not claims about a specific product’s controls. Teams should also decide what API activity to monitor and how to investigate failures, especially given the report’s finding that 17% of respondents use no monitoring tools.

Those capabilities illustrate the direction of agent infrastructure; they do not establish that API tests are more accurate or that a particular workflow improves quality. Teams still need to evaluate their own assertions, environment isolation, failure diagnosis, permissions, and compatibility with existing API definitions and tools.

Using a screenshot API as an agent-facing API example

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It is not a general API-testing platform; it is a concrete example of an API an agent can call when a task needs a web-page screenshot or PDF. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.

For a task that needs a screenshot rather than a browser session, the API accepts a GET request with a URL. For example:

What to evaluate in an AI-assisted API testing workflow

Rather than judging a tool by whether it can generate a test file, assess how it fits the full lifecycle:

  • Inputs: Can it work from the team’s API specification, collection, or code?
  • Assertions: Are generated checks understandable, editable, and tied to expected behavior?
  • Execution: Can the team run tests locally or in an editor and in CI without unsafe production access?
  • Coverage: Does the workflow support the kinds of contract, functional, regression, or performance testing the team actually needs?
  • Credentials and data: Can secrets and test data be handled without granting agents excess access?
  • Diagnosis: Do failures provide enough context to identify whether the cause is the API, test, environment, or agent?
  • Governance: Can the team control which agents may use which tools and APIs?
  • Interoperability: Does the workflow work with existing API definitions, monitoring, and CI/CD tools?

Reliability and cost: keep the human review in the loop

The available evidence supports AI as an aid to drafting and executing tests, not as a replacement for review or as a guaranteed quality improvement. Generated tests can inherit ambiguous requirements or encode a mistaken assumption. Keep ownership of expected behavior with the team, review test changes alongside code changes, and use CI results as one signal rather than a substitute for checking whether the tests cover the behavior that matters.

Cost and operational trade-offs depend on the tools and workflow a team chooses; the cited survey and guidance do not provide a comparable cost benchmark or head-to-head scorecard. Evaluate execution time, maintenance effort, credential handling, observability, and compatibility in the actual environment before expanding agent permissions or relying on an automated workflow.
