AI can help manual testers analyze requirements, draft test scenarios and data, prioritize coverage, and summarize defect reports. Treat every output as a candidate, not a test result: the tester must check it against product rules and verify behavior in the actual product.
Where AI fits in manual testing
Generative AI is useful for reducing the effort involved in analysis and documentation. It can turn source material into a first draft, help expose gaps, and organize information for review. ISTQB describes GenAI applications across the testing lifecycle, from requirements analysis and test design through reporting and continuous improvement: ISTQB CT-GenAI qualification material.
That does not make AI an authority on expected behavior. Requirements, acceptance criteria, and approved product decisions remain the basis for deciding whether a test is correct. A generated scenario can be plausible and still assume a feature or rule that does not exist.
A practical AI-assisted manual testing workflow
1. Check requirements for ambiguity
Give an approved assistant a sanitized requirement, user story, acceptance criteria, or description of a wireframe. Ask it to identify ambiguous wording, missing conditions, and questions that need stakeholder answers. Compare its questions with the actual product rules; do not let the model resolve open decisions by guessing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ISTQB identifies requirements, user stories, technical specifications, GUI wireframes, existing tests, and defect reports as possible inputs to test analysis and design. See the CT-GenAI certification page and its syllabus information.
2. Draft scenarios with traceability
Ask for positive, negative, boundary, and alternative-flow scenarios in the format your team uses. Require a reference to the acceptance criterion each case addresses. Then review the cases for duplicates, omissions, invented requirements, and steps that cannot be observed or reproduced.
For example, for a password-reset story, the assistant might suggest a valid registered address, an unregistered address, malformed input, repeated requests, and an expired reset link. These are prompts for review, not assertions about how your application must behave. The real expected result comes from product requirements and security decisions.

3. Prepare test data and exploratory charters
AI can propose categories of representative, boundary, or malformed data and suggest exploratory questions. Select data that is safe to use and relevant to real product risks. Have the tester decide what to investigate next based on observed behavior; exploratory testing is not replaced by a generated checklist.
4. Prioritize candidate coverage
Provide the assistant with approved risk information and ask it to group candidate tests by impact, likelihood, or dependency. Verify the rationale against your team’s risk model and release context. An AI-generated priority is not evidence that lower-ranked areas are safe to skip.
5. Summarize defects without losing evidence
Ask AI to group similar reports, extract recurring symptoms, or draft a clearer summary from logs and observations. Check every conclusion against the original records. A summary can help communicate evidence, but it cannot establish a defect that no one observed or verify that a suspected cause is correct.

6. Evaluate the workflow before scaling
Keep track of which suggestions were accepted, edited, or rejected, and how much reviewer effort they required. Compare the resulting coverage and review burden with your current method before expanding usage. NIST’s 2025 GenAI Code Challenge Evaluation Plan describes a pilot for evaluating AI-generated unit tests; it is a plan, not a result establishing benefits for manual testing.
Prompts that produce reviewable drafts
Give the model a bounded task, the source material it may rely on, and an explicit instruction to identify uncertainty rather than fill gaps. For example:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Ambiguity review: “Using only the acceptance criteria below, list ambiguous terms, missing conditions, and questions for the product owner. Do not invent behavior.”
- Scenario draft: “Draft positive, negative, boundary, and alternative-flow manual test scenarios. For each, quote or identify the acceptance criterion it covers. Mark any assumption as unresolved.”
- Defect summary: “Group these sanitized defect observations by symptom. Separate directly stated facts from possible explanations, and do not infer a root cause.”
These prompts are starting points. Adapt output fields, terminology, and traceability to your team’s test management process.

Review and data-safety guardrails
- Protect sensitive information. Use only tools approved for the data involved. Do not submit secrets, customer data, unreleased plans, or proprietary defect records unless organizational policy and the service’s data handling explicitly permit it. Privacy and retention terms differ by service; verify the applicable terms rather than assuming a universal guarantee.
- Keep the expected behavior authoritative. Check each proposed test against requirements and acceptance criteria. Ask for criterion-level traceability and inspect both contradictions and missing coverage.
- Independently verify high-impact flows. Have an appropriate domain expert review critical behavior, and execute tests against the product. Generated prose is not evidence of a pass, failure, or defect.
- Preserve exploratory judgment. Use generated charters to start investigation, then choose the next probe based on what the product actually does and the risks that emerge.
GitHub’s guidance for Copilot test suggestions says to review and refine generated output; its code-review guidance also recommends functional checks and static analysis. This article concerns using AI as an assistant to human-led testing. Testing a product that itself uses AI raises additional concerns, including nondeterministic or probabilistic behavior, data dependence, bias, and explainability. ISTQB discusses these issues in its CT-AI certification material. They should be handled as properties of the system under test, not confused with the risks of an assistant drafting test ideas.
Why AI does not replace a verification strategy
Testing still needs an appropriate mix of techniques and human review. NIST’s 2021 Guidelines on Minimum Standards for Developer Verification of Software, published October 6, 2021, recommends eleven verification techniques, including black-box and code-based testing, historical tests, automated testing, static scanning, and fuzzing. The guidance is about software verification generally, not an evaluation of generative AI; its practical lesson here is that an assistant’s draft does not remove the need to choose verification methods suited to the software and its risks.

If a testing workflow needs page screenshots as review evidence, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it can also capture an element, use a device or viewport setting, or wait for a selector or network idle. The response identifies page verdict and billing status. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the target URL; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
