It is most effective against steady, low-frequency noise such as engine rumble or ventilation hum; speech, sudden sounds and higher frequencies often remain audible. ANC reduces noise—it does not create silence—and ordinary consumer headphones are not workplace hearing protection unless labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR).
How does active noise cancellation work?
Microphones pick up surrounding sound. Electronics analyze it and generate an opposing sound signal, which the headphone driver plays. The original noise and the added signal can interfere destructively, reducing sound pressure at the ear. Bose describes this microphone-and-opposite-signal approach, and Sony describes its WH-1000XM5 as generating antiphase sound against outside noise. Bose’s explanation of noise-cancelling headphones; Sony WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.
The cancellation is local and imperfect: the system must respond quickly and accurately to sound at the listener’s ear, and sounds arriving from different directions cannot all be cancelled equally well. Designs also differ. A CDC-hosted study of a hearing-protector prototype describes a feedback arrangement in which an error microphone near the ear opening detects the sound and a speaker produces the needed cancellation signal. Its earcup and ear canal form a small enclosed volume, a more controlled acoustic setting than an open room. That specific microphone arrangement should not be assumed for every consumer headphone. CDC-hosted study: Active Noise Cancellation—Performance in a Hearing Protector Under Ideal and Degraded Conditions.
ANC and passive isolation are different
Passive isolation comes from physically covering or filling the ear, plus the materials and seal that limit sound entering. It does not need electronics. ANC adds electronic reduction to sound that reaches the listening space; in practice, a headphone’s overall noise reduction depends on both approaches. Fit and materials affect passive isolation, while the seal can also influence how much sound reaches the ear.

Which sounds does ANC reduce best?
Conventional headphone ANC generally suits steady, low-frequency sounds. Engine rumble, train noise and ventilation hum are useful examples. Bose says ANC tends to reduce mid- and high-frequency sounds less effectively, particularly sudden sharp sounds. Sony likewise says its WH-1000XM5 primarily cancels low-frequency noise and notes that noise is reduced rather than completely cancelled. Bose’s explanation of noise-cancelling headphones; Sony WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.
| Sound character | What to expect | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Steady, low-frequency sound | Often the best fit for conventional ANC, though the amount of reduction varies by model and conditions. | Engine rumble, train noise, ventilation hum |
| Speech or changing sounds | May remain audible because ANC is less consistent against changing sound. | Nearby conversation |
| Sudden, sharp or higher-frequency sound | Often harder to reduce; it can remain noticeable. | A bark, a horn, sharp noise |
Why can I still hear people talking with noise-cancelling headphones?
Voices change quickly and contain frequencies that ANC generally reduces less effectively than steady low-frequency hum. The headphones may reduce the surrounding sound without eliminating the speech, so a conversation can still be heard. The physical seal and passive isolation matter too: how well the ear is covered or sealed affects how much external sound gets in.

Performance can also change with how a headset is worn and with the environment. Sony warns that the effect on its WH-1000XM5 can fluctuate with wearing condition and surroundings; covering its microphones can impair performance or cause feedback. It also notes that some sounds may seem unreduced—or more noticeable—in very quiet surroundings, and that road conditions can change results in vehicles. These are model-specific manufacturer cautions, not guarantees about every ANC product. Sony WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.
Does ANC work equally well in every environment?
No. A headphone’s result depends on the sound, the fit and seal, wearing condition, and surroundings. Even when ANC is active, some sounds can remain; what seems reduced in one setting may be more noticeable in another. If choosing headphones, consider the environment and noise character you expect, fit and comfort for the intended wear period, passive isolation, adjustable settings or ambient-awareness modes, and the manufacturer’s caveats for that model. Manufacturer descriptions are useful for understanding a product’s stated behavior, but they are not comparative tests showing that one model outperforms another.

Are noise-cancelling headphones hearing protection?
Do not treat ordinary consumer ANC headphones or earbuds as workplace hearing protection unless they are labeled with an NRR. NIOSH states: “This technology can be added to headphones or earbuds which will cancel noise but should not be considered hearing protection unless labeled with an NRR.” NIOSH, Provide Hearing Protection.
Workers should use hearing protectors selected for their measured exposure and fit, such as appropriately chosen earplugs or earmuffs. NIOSH cautions that the package NRR may not reflect the protection an individual worker receives and describes individual fit testing as the best way to check protection when available. For workers exposed to 100 dBA or greater, or to impulse sounds, the cited NIOSH guidance says to provide double protection: earmuffs over earplugs. Follow workplace hearing-conservation procedures rather than substituting ANC listening headphones.

What does one laboratory study show about ANC limits?
A CDC-hosted technical study tested an older prototype active-noise-cancellation hearing protector on a manikin in a reverberant laboratory. Under its ideal laboratory condition, ANC added 5 to 23 dB of attenuation in the 31.5–500 Hz third-octave bands. In the same test, ANC amplified noise by 2 to 5 dB in the 800, 1,000 and 1,250 Hz bands, within the range above 630 Hz through the 2,000 Hz third-octave band. These are results for that prototype and test setup—not a general rating or a performance claim for current retail headphones.
