A short snippet can show why synchronous code runs before a promise reaction, why a timer callback comes later, and how microtasks can delay other work.
The first-person title suggests a personal build story, but the available information does not establish who built the example tool or how it was made. This article focuses on the learning problem and on the visualizer’s advertised features, not an unverified account of its development.
How does the JavaScript event loop work?
JavaScript execution involves both an engine and a host environment. The engine implements the language; the host supplies ways to interact with the world. In a browser, those host features include the DOM and browser event-loop behavior. Node.js is another host environment. MDN’s JavaScript execution model explains this distinction.
The call stack and queues serve different purposes. The stack tracks execution contexts—the code currently being run. Queues hold deferred work, such as a promise reaction or timer callback, until the runtime can process it. A running job completes before another job is processed; JavaScript does not interrupt ordinary synchronous code midway through to run a queued callback.

For browser code, a useful simplified view of an event-loop iteration is:
- Run at most one pending task, such as a script or timer callback.
- When that task’s stack is clear, process pending microtasks until the microtask queue is empty. This includes microtasks added while draining the queue.
- Perform rendering and painting if needed, then continue to a later task.
This is a model of browser scheduling, not a promise that every callback is followed by a visible paint. MDN describes rendering as work the browser performs when needed in its in-depth guide to microtasks and the runtime.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
What will be the output of this code?
Consider this snippet:
console.log('code');
Promise.resolve().then(() => console.log('promise'));
setTimeout(() => console.log('timeout'));
The output order is:
code— the synchronous statement runs as the script executes.promise— the promise reaction is queued as a microtask and runs after the current task completes.timeout— the timer callback is a later task.
The timer is not a way to demand an exact delay before execution; it schedules a callback to run as a later task when the runtime can process it. The key distinction in this example is that the promise reaction is handled during microtask processing before the next task is selected. The example follows the scheduling order shown in The Modern JavaScript Tutorial’s event-loop explanation.
How do microtasks and macrotasks work?
“Macrotask” is a common teaching term for a task. Timer callbacks are tasks; promise reactions are microtasks. Once the runtime starts draining the microtask queue, it keeps processing until that queue is empty, including newly queued microtasks. Only then can it proceed to a later task and, where appropriate, rendering.

That queue-draining rule has a practical consequence: recursively scheduling microtasks can keep the browser busy and delay rendering or other tasks. By contrast, splitting heavy work into short timer-scheduled chunks gives the runtime opportunities to process other work between chunks. This does not make the work free, but it can improve responsiveness. For complex work, moving computation to a worker may be a better fit; workers and their trade-offs depend on the task and the browser APIs it needs. See MDN’s guidance on using microtasks and the runtime and rendering.
What a visual event-loop walkthrough can show
A visualizer can make the scheduling model concrete by showing where each piece of work is at a given step: currently executing code on the stack, asynchronous mechanisms associated with the host, queued microtasks, queued callbacks, and resulting console output. Instead of inferring the sequence from prose, a learner can pause and inspect a transition.

The JavaScript Event Loop Visualizer advertises editable snippets, play and step controls, and panels for the call stack, Web APIs, microtask queue, callback queue, and console. Those are the site’s stated features; they should not be read as independent verification that the tool reproduces every detail of a browser or Node.js runtime.
For the snippet above, a useful walkthrough would make three changes visible: the script logs immediately, the promise reaction enters the microtask queue, and the timer callback becomes eligible as a later task. The value is not just seeing the final output; it is being able to connect that output to the scheduling steps.

Where visualization helps—and where it can mislead
A stepwise display is most useful for building a mental model: which code is running now, what has been deferred, and what must finish before the next task. It is especially helpful when comparing promises with timers or diagnosing why a page appears unresponsive.
- Use it to reason about order: follow a small example and predict the next stack or queue change before advancing.
- Use it to notice blocking work: synchronous code runs to completion, so a long computation can prevent the browser from handling interaction while it runs.
- Do not treat the display as the runtime itself: a teaching model may simplify host APIs, rendering, or scheduling details. The cited visualizer’s advertised panels alone do not establish its fidelity across environments.
For a broader evaluation of any event-loop teaching tool, check whether it targets browsers, Node.js, or both; which queues and runtime phases it represents; whether execution can be stepped, replayed, or edited; how it models timers, Web APIs, and rendering; and whether it states its limitations. These distinctions matter because the JavaScript engine does not provide every host behavior shown in a browser-oriented diagram.
