It records both magnitude and phase, so you can examine not only how much signal is reflected but also infer the DUT’s complex impedance across frequency. For a useful result, perform a one-port calibration with its reference plane at the DUT connection point.
What an S11 measurement tells you
The analyzer launches a signal from port 1 and measures the portion that returns from the DUT. S11 is that port’s reflection measurement. Its magnitude describes the size of the reflection relative to the incident signal; its phase preserves the vector information needed to interpret the reflection as complex impedance.
S11 is frequency-dependent, so a sweep shows how the reflection changes across a frequency range. A single reading can be useful, but it does not describe behavior across a band or preserve all the information needed for impedance analysis if only a scalar magnitude is recorded.
How to set up a useful measurement
Choose the analyzer and calibration standard
Use an analyzer that supports vector measurement over the DUT’s frequency range, with a compatible port configuration and connector. For a one-port S11 measurement, use a one-port reflection calibration method and standards defined for that analyzer and connector. Open, short, and load are common one-port standards, but the calibration kit definition and instrument procedure must match the equipment in use.

There is no universal analyzer or calibration-kit recommendation without knowing the DUT, frequency range, connector, and required accuracy. Adapters may be needed if the instrument and DUT interfaces differ; include any adapter that will remain in the measurement when establishing the reference plane.
Set the measurement conditions
Set the frequency span and other sweep conditions according to the DUT and the instrument’s procedure. The number of measurement points and IF bandwidth affect measurement time: on Keysight FieldFox instruments, a narrower IF bandwidth reduces trace noise but lengthens the sweep, and using more points also takes longer. This trade-off is model-specific, so consult the applicable analyzer manual.

Calibrate at the DUT reference plane
- Decide where the DUT will connect. If a cable will connect the analyzer to the DUT, use the cable end as the reference plane. If the DUT connects directly to the analyzer, use the instrument port.
- Configure the analyzer as required by its procedure. In particular, set the intended measurement conditions before calibration if the instrument requires it.
- Connect the specified one-port standards at the selected reference plane and complete the analyzer’s calibration procedure. The correction accounts for systematic reflection errors such as directivity, source match, and reflection tracking.
- Connect the DUT without disturbing the calibrated setup. Changes to cables, adapters, or connections can invalidate the error correction; recalibrate when the measurement configuration changes in a way that affects the reference plane.
- Measure and record the result with context. Note the frequency or sweep range and the reference plane along with the displayed S11 format.
Calibration is not a substitute for following the instrument’s kit definition and instructions. Procedures vary by analyzer family, and the standards must be appropriate for the instrument, connector, and frequency span.
Choose a display that answers the question

Return loss and SWR summarize aspects of match, while complex impedance and the Smith chart expose resistive and reactive behavior. Use the display that fits the question: a scalar return-loss result alone is insufficient when phase or impedance behavior matters.

How to report the measurement
- Identify the measurement as S11, a reflection measurement at port 1.
- State the frequency or sweep range; S11 changes with frequency.
- Name the reference plane, such as the analyzer port or the end of the measurement cable.
- Specify the displayed quantity—magnitude and phase, return loss, SWR/VSWR, or complex impedance—and include the trace or values relevant to the purpose.
For antenna impedance work, a VNA S11 measurement is a common way to examine impedance. The same core setup principles apply, but antenna-specific conclusions depend on the antenna and measurement conditions.
