A time card calculator can use the URL as its save file: enter hours, then bookmark or share a link that lets the page restore the calculation. This can avoid accounts or a server-side save feature, but it does not make the link private, prove the whole site has no backend, or turn an hours calculator into a payroll or compliance system. The exact behavior depends on how the calculator is built.
What “the URL is the save file” means
The calculator places some or all of its state in the page address. When someone opens that address, the page reads the saved values and reconstructs the calculation in the browser. The link can then act as a bookmark or a way to transfer the calculation to another device.
Web pages commonly have two places in a URL where this state can go: query parameters, which follow a question mark, and a fragment, which follows a hash symbol. The browser’s URLSearchParams API can read, set, and serialize query parameters. A URL fragment is handled by the browser after it retrieves the page and is not sent in the HTTP request. The title alone does not establish which method a particular calculator uses.

The page itself, analytics, fonts, or other dependencies may involve separate requests.

What you can and cannot rely on
Portable, but visible to link recipients
A URL can travel with you: bookmark it, copy it, or open it elsewhere. But anyone who receives or inspects the link may be able to see the encoded state. A fragment is not encryption or access control, and query parameters are not confidential either. Do not put employee names, identifiers, or other sensitive information in a shareable calculator URL.
Not the same as browser storage
A calculator could instead keep state in localStorage. That is origin-specific, not a portable save file: moving to another browser profile or device does not move that data with you. MDN notes that “localStorage data is specific to the protocol of the document.” Browser policy can prevent persistence, private-session data is cleared when the session ends, and behavior for pages opened through file: URLs is not guaranteed. Quotas and eviction rules also vary. Treat browser storage as local convenience, not a permanent backup.

Before relying on any calculator, check what it actually saves, whether it saves automatically, how to clear saved data, and whether copying or opening the URL on another device restores the same calculation. Those are implementation details, not guarantees implied by the title.
How to use a URL save safely
- Enter only the hours or other details the calculator needs; leave out employee names and identifying information.
- Use the calculator’s save, copy-link, or bookmark function if it provides one. If it does not, do not assume that changes are being saved to the URL.
- Open the resulting link in a separate tab or device to confirm that it restores the intended calculation.
- Share the link only with people who may see the values encoded in it. If you no longer want the calculation available through that link, delete your copy and ask recipients to do the same; deleting a link does not erase copies already made.
A time calculator is not an employer’s timekeeping system
A tool that adds user-entered hours is an arithmetic aid. It does not, by itself, establish that entries are complete and accurate, determine whether time is legally compensable, calculate every worker’s entitlement, or satisfy an employer’s recordkeeping obligations.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #21 says covered employers may use any timekeeping plan so long as it is complete and accurate. It describes records employers must maintain, including employee and wage information and daily and weekly hours. The fact sheet says payroll records must be kept for at least three years and records used to compute wages, including time cards, for two years. These are employer duties, not consequences of using a personal calculator. The fact sheet is a general summary revised in July 2008; check current federal guidance and the rules that apply where the work is performed.

The Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #22 describes the federal baseline: covered, nonexempt employees generally receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. A workweek is a fixed, recurring 168-hour period and does not have to begin on a calendar-week boundary.
That 40-hour threshold is not a universal rule for every worker or location. Coverage, exemptions, compensable-time rules, regular-rate calculations, state law, and special employment rules can change the analysis. A calculator that totals entered hours cannot determine those legal questions or guarantee a correct paycheck. Fact Sheet #22 is also a general summary revised in July 2008, so verify current official guidance for a real payroll or compliance decision.
