A custom transistor developed by researchers demonstrated a simple form of associative learning in a small sensor circuit: after five cycles pairing light with pressure, light alone triggered an output. The 2021 result shows how a device can emulate selected synapse-like behavior; it is not a human-like brain or a general-purpose learning machine.
What the researchers built
In a study published in Nature Communications on April 30, 2021, researchers reported an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) designed to retain changes in electrical conductance. Its active channel combined poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):tosylate (PEDOT:Tos) with polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). Unlike a generic off-the-shelf transistor, an OECT uses mobile ions as part of its operation.
Voltage-controlled ion processes altered the channel’s conductance, and the device retained a changed state after an input. In the researchers’ synapse analogy, the gate input corresponds to a presynaptic signal, channel current to a postsynaptic response, and stored conductance to a change in synaptic strength. These are selected functional similarities, not evidence that the transistor reproduces a biological synapse in full.
How the circuit simulated learning
The demonstration joined four components: a pressure sensor, a photoresistor, a volatile OECT and a non-volatile OECT. LED light was the conditioned stimulus; finger-applied pressure was the unconditioned stimulus. The setup therefore associated two physical sensor inputs, rather than relying only on electrical signals.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pairing: During training, the circuit received light and pressure together. The pressure input prompted a response, while the non-volatile transistor retained a conductance change associated with the paired inputs.
- Testing: After five training cycles, the researchers presented light without pressure. Light alone triggered the circuit’s output response.
The analogy is similar to a simplified Pavlov-style example: pressure stands in for food, and light for a bell. But the circuit did not understand either stimulus or infer a general rule. It registered a deliberately arranged association through its components and training sequence.
What the transistor measurements show
The paper reports a write bias below 0.8 V and charge retention longer than 200 minutes under the study’s measurement conditions. It also reports conductance states that could be tuned continuously and reversed. These results show controllable memory behavior in the prototype; they are not product specifications or evidence of commercial reliability. The reported measurements did not separate write and read operations.

The device’s retained conductance change is the key to the learning analogy: it lets the circuit preserve an effect of earlier input rather than responding only to what is happening at that instant. The study demonstrated this property in a specific engineered task, not a broad learning capability.
What this result does—and does not—establish
- It establishes: a custom organic electrochemical transistor can retain tunable conductance changes, and a circuit using it can respond to a learned association between light and pressure.
- It does not establish: human-like cognition, independent understanding of inputs, a general-purpose artificial brain, or a consumer or clinical product.
- It does not quantify: a system-level energy advantage over conventional computing. Combining memory and processing is a motivation for neuromorphic hardware, but this experiment principally measured transistor memory behavior and a small circuit task.
Where the research might lead
The researchers presented the circuit as a proof of concept. Northwestern Engineering described flexible and wearable electronics, smart robotics and implantable devices as possible future directions; the paper also discussed potential extensions to additional sensors, electronic skin, robotics and neuroprosthetics. These are proposed applications, not deployed systems or established medical uses.

Jonathan Rivnay, a senior co-lead on the study, described the work as demonstrating “an organic, plastic transistor that mimics key functions of a biological synapse.” He also characterized the application as a proof of concept that could be extended to more sensory inputs and integrated with other electronics. The practical value of such extensions remains a research question, not a result demonstrated by the light-and-pressure circuit.
