A Spring Boot starter can make retries of a mutating API request safer by claiming an Idempotency-Key atomically, running the handler once for that claim, storing the outcome, and returning that outcome when the same logical request is retried. That does not guarantee exactly-once execution: storage failures, crashes, key reuse, and concurrent requests all need explicit policies.

The title describes a first-person project, but the available project documentation does not establish the author’s code, implementation choices, tests, or production experience. The patterns below explain how this class of starter works without attributing another project’s features to the author.

What duplicate-request protection is meant to do

Clients retry mutating calls—such as creating an order or initiating a payment—when a timeout leaves them unsure whether the server finished. Without deduplication, the retry may perform the business operation again. Idempotency protection associates attempts for one logical operation with a key, then uses a recorded result to make a later matching attempt safe.

A typical request includes an Idempotency-Key header. The server scopes that key, claims it, and records enough information to distinguish a valid retry from a different request. If a matching request arrives after completion, the server can replay the saved outcome. A key is not a magic exactly-once switch: the application still has to define which operations it covers, what counts as the same request, and how failures are handled.

How the request lifecycle works

  1. Receive and validate the key. Decide whether a key is mandatory for the endpoint. If it is optional, a request without one may simply follow the normal handler path; behavior depends on the starter.
  2. Scope the key. Associate it with the relevant caller, endpoint, or operation so unrelated clients or operations do not collide. The precise scope is an implementation decision.
  3. Compare request identity. Some implementations fingerprint the request body. If the same key arrives with a different body, reject it rather than replaying an unrelated result. The detailed repository documentation describes mismatch rejection.
  4. Claim the key atomically. A shared store must let concurrent requests race safely so only one obtains the initial claim. The detailed repository documents Redis SETNX and PostgreSQL INSERT ... ON CONFLICT as claim mechanisms.
  5. Run the handler and record its outcome. Store the response information needed by the implementation to replay a completed request. Exactly which status, headers, and body are retained is library-specific.
  6. Handle a later request according to state. A completed matching key may replay the outcome; an in-progress key may wait, conflict, or follow another policy. Missing keys, mismatched bodies, and failed initial attempts also have implementation-specific behavior.

Why an atomic claim matters

If two copies of the same request arrive nearly simultaneously, a plain “check whether this key exists, then insert it” sequence is unsafe: both can observe no record and both can run the handler. The claim must be one atomic store operation, or be protected by an equivalent transaction or lock.

Atomic claiming coordinates contenders, but does not by itself make the business change and the idempotency record one indivisible operation. If the handler commits its business work and the application crashes before marking the key complete, a retry can run the work again. The detailed repository characterizes its Redis and JDBC annotation paths as at-least-once and explicitly warns about this completion-record failure window.

Choosing a store

The right store depends on where requests run, what durability you need, and how the store participates in business transactions. These tradeoffs are general deployment considerations; the feature details cited are documented by the referenced projects.

Store Coordination across instances Setup and key consideration
Process-local memory Does not coordinate separate application processes or instances. Simple to operate for a single process, but a restart loses its state. A second repository describes an in-memory store and a custom-storage SPI; its page says JDBC and Redis are roadmap items rather than shipped options. Project documentation.
Redis A shared Redis service can coordinate application instances, subject to Redis availability and consistency behavior. Requires Redis infrastructure. The detailed repository documents an atomic Redis claim and configurable TTL. Spring’s Spring Data Redis project is the relevant integration ecosystem.
JDBC / shared database A shared database can coordinate instances using database-level atomic claims. Uses the application’s data source and requires a schema. The detailed repository documents PostgreSQL INSERT ... ON CONFLICT; do not assume every database or integration has the same semantics.

These options are not interchangeable guarantees. A process-local store is not a distributed coordination mechanism; Redis or a shared database can be, but outage handling, persistence settings, transaction boundaries, and cleanup still matter. The detailed repository describes stronger JDBC behavior only under narrower transaction integration conditions, not as a blanket property of JDBC idempotency.

Policies a starter should make explicit

Key lifetime and reuse

Stored keys need a retention period. Once a record expires, the same key may be treated as new, so the period should reflect the client’s realistic retry window and the consequences of repeating the operation. The detailed repository documents a default TTL and per-endpoint overrides. Avoid treating a TTL from one library as a universal default.

Same key, different request

Replaying a prior result for a different payload can silently return the wrong answer. A body fingerprint or equivalent request-identity check can detect this case; the detailed repository describes rejecting a key/body mismatch. Confirm what inputs its fingerprint includes before relying on it.

Failures and retries

One documented policy releases keys for transient server failures but retains deterministic client failures. That avoids permanently pinning a retryable server error while preventing a corrected or repeated invalid request from being mistaken for a new operation. It is a policy choice, not a shared standard: another Redis-backed starter documents key removal on error, demonstrating that libraries differ.

Requests arriving while work is in progress

A contender that finds an unfinished claim cannot safely be assumed to receive the final response immediately. Depending on the library, it may be rejected, wait, or receive another response. A third repository documents an in-progress conflict exception. Check the particular starter’s response status and client retry guidance instead of assuming every duplicate is replayed.

What a starter should expose to application developers

An annotation such as @Idempotent can make protection easy to apply to selected Spring handlers, while configuration controls storage and policy. The detailed repository documents an annotation, Redis and JDBC options, TTL settings, optional required-key behavior, body-mismatch rejection, failure-release behavior, and a replay response marker. These are that repository’s documented features, not verified features of the project named in the title.

Another repository describes an annotation and an SPI for custom storage, with an in-memory implementation. Its compatibility notes state Java 21+ and Spring Boot 3.x, with Spring Boot 3.5 as its build/test target; these statements may change and should be confirmed on the project page before selecting it. View its current documentation.

When evaluating or building a starter, inspect the actual implementation and verify:

  • Which HTTP methods or handlers are intercepted, and whether the handler’s response can be serialized and replayed safely.
  • How keys are scoped, how request bodies are compared, and how key expiration is configured.
  • How a concurrent in-progress request is surfaced to the caller.
  • Which failures retain a key, which release it, and what happens if the backing store is unavailable.
  • Whether business work and completion recording share a transaction, and what failure window remains.
  • Supported Spring Boot and Java versions, storage backends, dependency coordinates, and migration requirements in the current repository documentation.

Practical limits and design checks

Idempotency protection is strongest when its boundary matches the business operation. If a handler sends a message, charges an external payment provider, or triggers another system, storing an HTTP result alone does not make that external side effect atomic with the key record. The downstream system may need its own idempotency mechanism, or the application may need a durable workflow/outbox design. Do not claim exactly-once behavior unless the full transaction and failure model supports it.

Before enabling a starter on a critical endpoint, test at least a completed retry, two concurrent requests with the same key, reuse of a key with a different body, expiry, a failed first attempt, and failure between business commit and completion storage. The behavior to assert should come from the selected starter’s documented contract and your endpoint’s requirements, not assumptions based on the annotation name.
