A computer-controlled laboratory system explored how oil droplets behave and selected new chemical recipes based on what it observed. The 2018 headline called this an “AI brain,” but the phrase is metaphorical: the robot used image analysis and an evolutionary algorithm, not a biological brain or general-purpose intelligence. The droplets were nonliving models—not cells—and the experiments suggest ways to investigate chemical evolution, not a recreation of life’s origin.

What the robot actually did

Researchers associated with University of Glasgow chemist Lee Cronin built a chemorobotic platform to test oil-in-water droplets. It prepared formulations, recorded their behavior, analyzed images, and used the results to choose later formulations. In this loop, the “AI” was software guiding experiments: image processing identified activity, while an evolutionary algorithm searched among candidate recipes.

The experimental setup combined a custom 3D-printed fluidic device with pumps and a camera. The water phase contained the cationic surfactant TTAB and was adjusted to pH 13. Four oil components were varied: 1-octanol, diethyl phthalate (DEP), 1-pentanol, and octanoic acid. This was specialized laboratory research, not a consumer robot or a home experiment.

How the recipe search worked

The researchers treated the proportions of the four oils as a digital “genome” and the droplets’ observed behavior as a “phenotype.” These terms describe a recipe and its effects; they do not mean the droplets carried genes. The primary study explicitly concerned simple oil-in-water droplet models without sequential genetic information.

Mapping possible formulations

The Nature Communications authors reported a lattice search across 282 oil formulations. This let the system explore combinations systematically rather than relying on a single recipe.

Selecting for activity

In a separate genetic-algorithm run, the authors tested 20 recipe “genomes” per generation for 10 generations. The selected measure was the number of active droplets after one minute. Under that defined activity measure, the droplet count nearly doubled over the run. This result describes the chosen experimental score; it is not a doubling of lifespan, biological cell number, or evolutionary fitness in general.

A distinct speed-optimization result

James Urquhart’s 2018 Chemistry World report separately described nearly 400 random mixtures explored in a little under two days, and a speed-optimization result reported as 14 times faster than predecessors after 30 generations. Those figures belong to the news report’s account of speed-selected exploration. They are not the 2017 paper’s 10-generation activity result, so the generations and outcomes should not be combined.

Why the environment mattered

The 2017 Nature Communications study examined droplets in configurable environments, including settings with physical obstacles. Changing those surroundings altered droplet behavior and therefore affected which formulations the algorithm selected. The environment was not merely a neutral backdrop: it helped determine which behaviors were favored and could change how a given recipe adapted under selection.

“The environment not only acts as an active selector over the genotypes, but also enhances the capacity for individual genotypes to undergo adaptation in response to environmental pressures.”

That sentence is from the Nature Communications paper’s authors collectively. Here, “genotypes” refers to the digital recipe representation, not DNA-bearing organisms.

What “protocell” means in this experiment

Protocells are simplified models used to study properties that may be relevant to the emergence of life. These oil droplets moved and divided, among other reported behaviors, but the study did not make them living cells. They had no DNA or RNA sequence carrying hereditary information, and their observed division should not be mistaken for biological reproduction.

The system therefore explored how chemical composition and environmental conditions can produce and select behaviors in droplet models. It can inform research into chemical evolution and origins-of-life questions, but it does not show how life originated or establish that these droplets were alive.

How this differs from other protocell research

“Protocell” covers distinct experimental approaches, so the label alone does not mean two projects test the same kind of evolution. The oil-droplet study selected formulations according to behavior; a separate 2024 Nature Communications study reported liposomes supporting DNA replication and adaptive evolution through compartmentalized in-vitro transcription, translation, and replication. The latter is a distinct system, not a follow-up result of the 2017 oil-droplet experiment.

Another related project, reported by PNAS authors in 2018, used an autonomous robotic platform to explore unstable protocells in more than 7,000 experiments. That figure belongs to that separate study, not to the oil-droplet work.

What the headline gets right—and what it doesn’t

  • Right: A laboratory robot and algorithms automated formulation, observation, image analysis, and selection of subsequent recipes.
  • Needs qualification: “AI brain” is shorthand for a defined computational workflow, not a robot with human-like understanding.
  • Not demonstrated: The droplets were not living cells, did not carry genetic sequences in this study, and did not recreate the origin of life.

The strongest contribution is methodological: a computer-guided experimental loop could systematically explore how droplet recipes and physical surroundings influence behavior. That gives researchers a way to probe simplified chemical systems relevant to origins-of-life questions without mistaking a model for life itself.
