A self-hosted network video recorder can replace a camera service’s cloud-analysis subscription when your cameras provide compatible streams and you are willing to supply and maintain the local hardware. Frigate is one option: it records and analyzes video on your own system, but the title alone does not establish which recorder was used, which service was cancelled, or whether the change saved money overall.
What a self-hosted NVR changes
A network video recorder (NVR) manages camera video: it can record footage, let you review events, and—in systems with object detection—identify activity such as people or vehicles. Frigate is designed as a local NVR for Home Assistant, with local object detection, object-based recording retention, MQTT communication, and RTSP restreaming. See the Frigate documentation.
With a local setup, video processing and recordings can remain on your network rather than relying on a vendor’s cloud service. That can reduce dependence on a recurring cloud-analysis fee, but it does not make the system cost-free: you provide the host, cameras, storage, network, electricity, and maintenance. The Frigate project site describes local processing and recording; the precise balance of local and optional cloud features depends on your configuration.
What you need before choosing a host
Compatible camera streams
Check the exact camera model for accessible RTSP streams; compatibility can vary between models from the same manufacturer. Frigate’s recommended hardware guide recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. Cameras that expose multiple streams can also let you use different resolutions for detection, live viewing, and recording.

A host sized for the workload
Capacity depends on the number of cameras, resolution, activity, recording configuration, and whether detection is enabled. Frigate recommends hardware acceleration to reduce the CPU load from video decoding. Its getting-started guide also recommends configuring a low-resolution detection stream, including when using Frigate only for recording. Consult the getting-started guidance and confirm which acceleration method your hardware and deployment support.
The hardware guide names the Beelink EQ13 as capable of detection on several 1080p cameras under low-to-medium activity. That is a workload-qualified example, not a guarantee for every camera count, resolution, or activity level.

Local storage and network
Recording retention depends on the storage you provide and the settings you choose. Estimate capacity from each camera’s bitrate, the number of cameras, whether recording is continuous or event-based, and how many days of footage you want to keep; the cited documentation does not establish one ideal drive size for every setup.
For wired cameras, Power over Ethernet (PoE) can simplify power and connectivity. Frigate’s hardware guide favors PoE over Wi-Fi, but does not prescribe a specific switch, port count, or power budget. Work those out from your camera requirements before buying equipment.

How Frigate is deployed
Frigate runs in Docker and can also be installed as a Home Assistant App. To use the Home Assistant integration, install the integration component and provide a shared MQTT broker. The installation documentation explains the available deployment paths and requirements.
- Check the cameras. Confirm each model exposes a stream Frigate can access, and note the available resolutions and codecs.
- Choose the host and storage. Match the system to your camera workload, decoding needs, recording policy, and retention target.
- Install Frigate. Use Docker or the Home Assistant App route appropriate to your setup, following the official installation instructions.
- Configure streams and detection. Set a suitable low-resolution stream for detection and choose recording and retention settings for your needs.
- Add Home Assistant integration if wanted. Set up the integration component and shared MQTT broker; this is separate from simply running the recorder.
- Test local access and failure conditions. Review live streams and recordings on your network, then verify what remains available if internet access is lost.
Will it work without internet?
Frigate can operate offline after required models have been downloaded, provided cloud-dependent features are disabled. Its network requirements describe this condition. Local operation therefore improves resilience to an internet outage, but it is not automatic for every feature or configuration; test the functions you rely on before treating the system as independent of the internet.

Does replacing a subscription save money?
It may reduce recurring service charges, but whether it saves money depends on your previous subscription and the costs of your local system. A fair comparison includes the former service fee alongside the upfront host, cameras, and storage, plus continuing electricity, replacement storage, network costs, maintenance, and any optional cloud services. The cited official materials do not provide a measured head-to-head cost study or typical savings figure, so no general payback period can be inferred.
To calculate your own result, compare the subscription payments you would otherwise make over a defined period with the portion of local hardware and storage costs attributable to the system over that same period, then add ongoing costs. Keep one-time purchases separate from recurring bills. Without the actual former bill, hardware spend, and operating costs, a claim that a particular user saved a specific amount is not established.
