A GDSII- or OASIS-based mask data preparation (MDP) flow can reduce duplicated geometry processing by preserving layout hierarchy during intermediate steps and postponing final fracturing until near mask writing. The benefit depends on the flow and design; a 2004 trade article reported substantial savings in its examples, but those figures are not a present-day guarantee for every foundry or mask shop.
Where mask data preparation fits
GDSII and OASIS are layout databases handed off for manufacturing; they are not necessarily the formats consumed by a mask writer. The foundry prepares or modifies the customer’s database to drive the mask data server, after which the mask shop or server produces data suited to its writing equipment. The NDIA process overview gives MEBES as one example of a writer-oriented format. NDIA’s foundry process overview describes this handoff.
MDP can involve more than converting shapes. Depending on the process, preparation may include optical proximity correction (OPC), area fill, geometry operations, and final data conversion. The exact sequence and division of work between foundry and mask shop vary.
Why mask data is fractured
Fracturing converts layout geometry into shapes or a representation the selected mask writer can process efficiently. One implementation converts GDSII geometry into trapezoids; the writer-oriented data must also be suitable for efficient rasterization. The required output depends on the writing path. Siemens lists Calibre FRACTURE outputs including MEBES, JEOL, Micronic, NuFlare VSB and MBF, OASIS.MASK, and OASIS.MBW. Those are product capabilities, not a universal list of formats accepted by every mask shop. Confirm the exact input and output requirements with the relevant tool vendor and mask shop. How preserving hierarchy can reduce repeated work
A hierarchical layout represents repeated structures as instances or references rather than duplicating every shape in a flat database. The 2004 EE Times article argues that a conventional flow may flatten or fracture data early, then need to fracture it again after geometry changes. If hierarchy has already been discarded, later operations may have to process a much larger representation.

The alternative described in that article keeps a hierarchical GDSII- or OASIS-based exchange format between tools and delays final fracture until closer to mask writing. That can preserve reusable structure through geometry processing, limit intermediate file handling, and avoid unnecessary reprocessing in the flow described. - Which input and final writer formats the specific tool and mask shop accept.

Capabilities are vendor-specific. XYALIS describes its MDP solution as handling GDSII, OASIS, and MEBES, with GUI, command-line, Tcl/Tk, and Python automation options. XYALIS MDP Fraunhofer IPMS also describes a service that checks and documents GDSII/OASIS data for delivery to a mask manufacturer, coordinated with lithography specialists. These descriptions show that software and service options exist; they do not provide an apples-to-apples current benchmark or establish which option is faster for a particular production job.
