A flaw in FireEye’s Virtual Execution Engine (VXE) could prevent certain Windows files from being behaviorally analyzed. The reported cause was unsanitized filename handling in a batch script: Windows environment variables embedded in a filename could expand, making the script’s copy operation fail. The engine could then treat the file as non-malicious and temporarily suppress later analysis of files with the same MD5 hash. This was a specific dynamic-analysis bypass—not evidence that every FireEye detection layer was defeated.
How the VXE bypass worked
FireEye’s VXE dynamically analyzed files by running them in a virtual machine. In the Windows workflow described by SecurityWeek on February 17, 2016, the engine copied a binary into the VM as malware.exe, then used a batch script to copy it to a temporary location under its original filename before execution. The original filename was not sanitized.
Windows environment variables embedded in that filename could expand when the script ran. That expansion could make the destination filename invalid, causing the copy to fail. Since the binary was not copied to the location where the engine would execute it, its behavior was not analyzed in the VM. The engine could consequently treat the file as non-malicious. SecurityWeek’s account describes this as a flaw in VXE’s file-analysis workflow.
Why the hash list mattered
After the clean verdict, the engine could add the file’s MD5 hash to a list of binaries it had already analyzed. According to SecurityWeek’s report, the list was cleared the following day. During that interval, a later file with the same hash could skip analysis, even if it arrived under a different filename.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Blue Frost Security described the effect this way: “This effectively allows an attacker to whitelist a binary once and then use it with an arbitrary file name in a following attack.” Security Affairs also reported the researchers’ explanation on February 18, 2016: Security Affairs’ report on the VXE flaw.
The attack sequence depended on both parts of the behavior: first, a filename that triggered the failed copy and clean verdict; then, a matching binary presented again while the hash remained on the temporary list. The contemporaneous coverage described a possible delivery in which the initial sample arrived inside an archive and the same binary was used in a later attack under an arbitrary filename. The reports do not establish how often this technique was used.

Disclosure and what FireEye said it had observed
Blue Frost reported the issue to FireEye in September 2015. FireEye asked the researchers to delay public disclosure because many customers had not applied updates. SecurityWeek published its account on February 17, 2016.
At the time of disclosure, FireEye told SecurityWeek: “We have not seen any active exploits of the evasion technique against customers, but highly urge customers to update to the latest FEOS as soon as possible to ensure they are secure.” That statement records what the company said it had observed then; it does not establish current prevalence or prove that exploitation never occurred.

What the report does—and does not—show
- It shows: contemporaneous reporting identified a flaw in VXE’s Windows file-analysis workflow, involving unsanitized filenames, batch-script expansion, failed copying, and temporary hash-based suppression.
- It does not show: that every FireEye detection mechanism was bypassed, how many customers or files were affected, or how many attacks used the technique.
- It cannot establish current status: the 2016 reports do not establish the support or patch status of any appliance still deployed today.
