Install Hotspot Shield from the official source for your device: download the Windows installer from your Hotspot Shield account page, or get the app from the Mac App Store, Google Play, or Apple App Store. Open it after installation and follow its sign-in and setup prompts; depending on the device, you may also need to approve a VPN profile or activate the app from another device.
Choose the installation route for your device

Install Hotspot Shield on Windows
- Sign in to your Hotspot Shield account on its account page.
- Open the Hotspot Shield tab and download the Windows app.
- Open the downloaded
.exefile. Choose Install and follow the installer prompts. - When installation finishes, open Hotspot Shield and select Start. Use the app’s server-location selection if you want to choose a location.
These steps follow the vendor’s Windows installation instructions and Windows connection guide. Hotspot Shield says its desktop app updates automatically after installation, except for the version downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

Install it on a Mac
- Open the Mac App Store and search for “Hotspot Shield.”
- Select GET, then INSTALL APP.
- Launch the app and allow the VPN profile installation prompt if macOS displays it.
- Find Hotspot Shield in Launchpad and open it to continue setup.
The steps are from Hotspot Shield’s Mac installation guide. Store labels can vary as the interface changes.

Install it on an Android phone or tablet
- Open Google Play and search for “Hotspot Shield.”
- Select the app, tap Install, and accept any confirmation prompt shown by Google Play.
- Open the app and follow its sign-in or subscription prompts.
The vendor’s Android installation article says Android 8.0 or later is compatible, while its supported-device article lists Android 5.0 or later. Because these Hotspot Shield support pages disagree, check the current Google Play listing on your specific device rather than relying on a single minimum-version figure.
Install it on an iPhone or iPad
- Download Hotspot Shield from the Apple App Store.
- When the download finishes, open the app and follow the prompts to sign in.
- On iOS 14 or later, Hotspot Shield says VPN configuration-profile setup is included with the app installation; you should not need to follow the same manual profile process described in older instructions.

Install it on Android TV
- From the Android TV home screen, open Apps, then Google Play Store.
- Search for Hotspot Shield and select Install.
- Open the app. Use the URL or QR code displayed on the TV to complete activation from a phone or computer.
Hotspot Shield’s Android TV instructions require a Premium account for TV use. Confirm that your exact TV or streaming-device model is compatible: support for Android TV does not mean the app works on every smart TV or streaming device.
Check device support and account requirements
Having an installation route does not guarantee that every device category is supported. Hotspot Shield’s supported-device and account-limits page lists routers, gaming consoles, Linux, non-Android smart TVs, and Kindle tablets among unsupported categories.

The same vendor article, updated October 8, 2025, says Basic accounts can link one device and Premium accounts can add up to ten. Account rules can change, so check that page if the device limit matters to your setup. Premium users need to sign in to enable Premium features; Android TV specifically requires Premium.

If the app installs but will not connect, or shows “Something went wrong,” work through these checks in order. The steps reflect vendor support guidance and may not resolve every cause.

- Check internet access. Confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data works without the VPN, then retry.
- Update the app and device. Install available Hotspot Shield and operating-system updates.
- Check for software conflicts. Temporarily rule out interference from another VPN, firewall, antivirus, or network utility. Re-enable security software after testing; if it is responsible, use an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Recreate the VPN profile if needed. On iOS, open Hotspot Shield and use Settings → Re-install VPN Profile. On Mac, the vendor’s connection guidance describes removing the VPN profile and reinstalling the app if necessary.
- Try the platform-specific recovery steps. On Android, the vendor suggests clearing the app cache or data and restarting; clearing data signs you out. On Windows, its guidance includes restarting the Hotspot Shield service, ending a stuck Hotspot Shield process, and reinstalling the app if earlier steps fail.
