Neither is better in every case. HostGator’s shared plans suit a small or first website where managed basics and phone or chat support matter more than server control. AWS is not one product: Lightsail is the closest comparison for a simple monthly-priced server, EC2 is a flexible infrastructure service, and Elastic Beanstalk is an application deployment service that bills for the AWS resources it uses. So the fair question is which AWS service you would actually run against HostGator, and what your site costs over the full term, not which name has the bigger reputation.
What “AWS hosting” actually includes
AWS sells several services that people loosely call hosting. Each answers a different need, and comparing HostGator with the wrong one produces a misleading result.
AWS Lightsail
Lightsail is AWS’s simplified option for building websites and web applications. AWS describes it as a simple unified platform with foundational services and defined bundles. It is the most direct counterpart to a HostGator VPS or a small hosting plan, because you choose a bundle with set CPU, memory, storage and transfer allowances and pay a fixed monthly price for it.

AWS EC2
EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is AWS’s flexible compute service. It offers a much wider range of instance types, networking choices and scaling options than Lightsail, and it is usually priced on a pay-per-use basis or with commitments. It suits teams that need to shape infrastructure around a workload. For a single brochure site, it is usually more configuration than the job requires.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk
Elastic Beanstalk is an application deployment service. You upload application code and it provisions the underlying AWS resources, such as compute, load balancing and storage, to run it. There is no separate Elastic Beanstalk service charge, but those underlying resources are billed, so the total cost depends on what the application needs to run.

What you will actually pay
HostGator: introductory prices
HostGator’s shared-plan page lists starting promotional prices of $2.75 per month for Hatchling, $3.95 per month for Baby and $5.95 per month for Business. These discounts apply to the initial term. After that, each plan renews at its regular rate. The renewal amounts were not established in the sources used for this article, so the entry price is not a reliable measure of what you will pay after the first term. Check the renewal price on the checkout page before you buy, and calculate the cost over the length of the term you intend to keep.
AWS Lightsail: a fixed bundle
AWS’s Lightsail bundle documentation lists a Linux/Unix, public-IPv4 Nano plan at $5 per month. It is described with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD storage and 1 TB of data transfer. That $5 figure is a listed price for one example bundle, not a complete website budget. The selected region, extra storage, backups, static IP and other services can add charges, and bundle prices and allowances can vary by region.

EC2 and Elastic Beanstalk: usage-based costs
EC2 and Elastic Beanstalk do not have a single headline price that works for comparison. EC2 charges depend on instance type, time running, storage, data transfer and any commitment you choose. Elastic Beanstalk adds no fee of its own, but the instances, load balancers and storage it creates are billed at their own rates. A realistic AWS estimate has to list every resource the application will run on.

The biggest practical difference is who manages the server. HostGator shared hosting handles the software environment for you, which is why it appeals to people who want a control panel and support rather than a command line. The trade-off is that you cannot install arbitrary server software or change system-level settings. HostGator’s own comparison chart places root access on its VPS and dedicated plans, so if you need that level of control while staying with HostGator, you would move to one of those plans rather than stay on shared hosting.

Lightsail offers more control than a shared plan through a server you can configure, but its bundles are fixed. Growing usually means moving to a larger bundle. EC2 is designed for variable load and a wide range of configurations, and Elastic Beanstalk sits between the two, managing deployment while leaving the underlying resources as your responsibility to size and pay for.
None of the sources used for this article include a controlled performance benchmark that compares HostGator shared hosting with any AWS service. This article therefore does not claim that either is faster or more reliable. Test speed and uptime for your own site, or check independent benchmarks published for the plans you are considering.

Which one fits your situation
- A first WordPress or small business site where you want managed basics: HostGator shared hosting is the simpler match. Confirm the renewal price and the features included in the term you select.
- A site that needs root access but a predictable bill: Compare a HostGator VPS plan with Lightsail. Check the Lightsail bundle for your region and traffic before committing.
- An application with variable traffic or specific infrastructure needs: Assess EC2 and its supporting resources, rather than comparing against a single HostGator introductory rate.
- An application you want to deploy without designing every resource: Elastic Beanstalk can reduce setup work, but you still pay for the resources it provisions, so estimate them before you deploy.
How to run a fair cost comparison
- Write down the site workload: type of site, expected monthly visitors, storage needs and whether you need email or databases.
- Choose the same time horizon for both options, such as 12 or 24 months, and note the HostGator term you would select.
- Look up the HostGator renewal rate for that plan on its checkout or plan page, and add any domain, SSL or add-on costs that apply to your setup.
- For Lightsail, select the bundle that meets your requirements in your intended AWS region, then add extra storage, backups, static IP addresses and data transfer beyond the bundle allowance.
- For EC2 or Elastic Beanstalk, list each resource the application will use, price each one in the same region, and add data transfer and storage. Use AWS’s pricing tools to produce the estimate.
- Compare the totals for the same period and note which costs are fixed and which change with traffic.
