Neither option wins in general. A hosted label API is usually the better fit when the carrier should own label creation and output format. A local PDF library is usually the better fit when your application must control the layout and rendering path. The deciding factors at production scale are your real carrier mix, the printers you must support, peak concurrency, and how each option fails. No official source compares the two on speed, reliability, or cost, so you need to measure both against your own workload before committing.
What you are actually choosing between
The phrase “PDF API versus PDF library” hides two different architectures. In the first, your application sends shipment data to a carrier or label provider, and that party builds the label and returns it as PDF, PNG, or a printer language such as ZPL. In the second, your application builds the label document itself, using a library such as PDFKit, and then streams the file to a printer queue, a storage bucket, or an HTTP response.
| Concern | Hosted label API | Local PDF library |
|---|---|---|
| Who builds the label | The carrier or provider, using its own label specification | Your code, using your layout and fonts |
| Output formats | Depends on the provider; documented examples include PDF, PNG, and ZPL | Whatever your library writes, typically PDF; printer languages require a separate conversion step |
| Failure surface | Network, provider availability, provider throttling, credentials, version changes | Runtime, font and file-system dependencies, rendering bugs, and your own capacity |
| Label state | Provider-issued identifiers and, for some APIs, get and void operations | Entirely yours to record |
| Carrier acceptance | Generally handled by the provider, but still verify against its current instructions | Your responsibility to validate with each carrier |
| Performance data | No official latency or throughput figures in the documentation reviewed | No official latency or throughput figures in the documentation reviewed |
What hosted label APIs provide
The three hosted examples below show how much the details vary. Treat each one as a snapshot of its official documentation, and check the current version before you build against it.
DHL eCommerce Americas Label API
DHL’s official Label API page identifies version 4.0.0 and a United States region. It supports domestic and international labels and create, get, and void operations. Each create request produces one shipping label, and the label content is returned directly in the response in PNG, PDF, or ZPL format. DHL distinguishes customer-provided package identifiers from DHL-generated package and tracking identifiers. For international shipments, the last-mile tracking ID is available only after the shipment has been shipped.

DHL Freight Print API
DHL Freight’s Print API documents PDF, ZPL, ZPL300, and ZPL600 outputs, where the ZPL variants target label printers at 203, 300, and 600 DPI. The documented preconditions are narrow. The service is limited to existing DHL Freight business customers with a valid contract, and to specified palletized road freight shipments over 35 kg in Europe. It does not describe parcel labels or other geographies, so do not treat it as evidence that DHL’s freight endpoint can replace a parcel label API in your system.

What a local PDF library provides
PDFKit’s official getting-started documentation shows a Node.js workflow in which you create a PDFDocument, pipe its output stream to a file or an HTTP response, and call end() to finalize the document. The library does not save the file on its own. The browser build behaves differently, with different file-system access and font registration requirements, so a server-side design and a client-side design need separate testing.
A local library gives you full control over label layout, timing, and where bytes go. It does not give you carrier rules. You must reproduce the label dimensions, barcode symbology, and human-readable fields that each carrier requires, and you must confirm that the output prints correctly. Its benefits are control and independence from a remote dependency. Its costs are engineering time and ownership of every rendering edge case.

A decision framework
Work through these questions in order. Your answers usually settle the choice before you run any benchmark.
- Does a carrier or provider need to create the label? If the carrier requires its own label content, barcode, or service data, a hosted API is the lower-risk path. If you already hold the label content and only need to lay it out, a local library may be enough.
- Which printers must accept the output? If your fleet uses thermal printers that take ZPL, confirm that the chosen provider offers ZPL in the form and DPI your printers need. If you print PDFs through a standard driver, verify page size and scaling in your printing pipeline.
- Which carriers and regions are in scope? Check geography and shipment type first. A freight endpoint, a US parcel endpoint, and an international parcel flow are different products even when they share a vendor name.
- How long must labels remain retrievable? If the answer is longer than the provider’s URL lifetime, you must store label bytes yourself in either architecture.
- Can your team own the rendering environment? A local library ties label output to your runtime, fonts, and dependency upgrades. If that maintenance is a burden, a hosted service moves part of it to the provider and adds a dependency on the provider’s uptime and version changes.
Failure handling and duplicate labels
At production scale, the harder problem is usually not rendering. It is what happens when a request times out after the provider has created a label, or when a retry creates a second one. Hosted APIs with create and void operations make this a state-management problem. Local rendering avoids a remote duplicate, but a retry can still produce a duplicate print job or a second stored file.

- Use an idempotency key or equivalent deduplication. AWS’s serverless guidance recommends idempotent handling and graceful treatment of duplicate events. Apply the same principle around shipment and label creation, keyed on your internal shipment ID.
- Persist before you print. Record the provider identifiers, the label bytes or durable storage location, and a status such as pending, created, printed, or voided before you send anything to a printer.
- Retry with backoff and jitter. AWS guidance recommends backoff with jitter for throttling responses. Set a retry ceiling so a provider outage does not stall your queue indefinitely.
- Load test the timeouts. AWS guidance specifically calls for load testing timeout values and for accounting for downstream throughput. A compute platform can scale faster than a carrier or provider can accept requests, so the slowest dependency sets your real capacity.
The AWS recommendations are written for serverless workflows. Adapt them to your own environment instead of treating them as a label-rendering benchmark.
Retention and delivery
Choose the delivery method by how you will use the label after creation.
- Inline response: best when one known format is enough and you want to store the bytes immediately.
- Download URL: useful when you need multiple formats or want the provider to host the file temporarily, but you must fetch the file before it expires and save it.
- Local storage: required for any label you may need after the provider’s retention window, and advisable for audit trails in every case.
Validate the physical label, not just the file
A PDF that opens correctly is not proof that a label will scan. Build a validation set of representative labels for each carrier, service level, and shipment type you handle, then test each one through the actual driver and printer you deploy. Check the following:
- Printed dimensions match the expected layout, for example the 4 by 6 inch layout documented by ShipStation.
- Barcodes scan reliably at the print resolution you chose, including ZPL at 203, 300, or 600 DPI where applicable.
- Orientation and rotation are correct for the printer and the carrier’s requirements.
- Fonts render as expected on every server or client where the label is generated.
- Each carrier accepts the labels in production, not just in a sandbox.
Measuring cost and performance
No official source reviewed here publishes a benchmark, a throughput figure, a price comparison, or a local rendering cost. Any number you see in a vendor comparison should be checked against your own workload. Measure median and tail latency for render-and-deliver, at your expected peak concurrency, using documents that match your real label mix. Then add the costs that often get left out: implementation and maintenance time, compute, storage, support, network overhead, retries after failures, and any per-label charges from the provider.
Run the same test for both architectures if you are still undecided. The option that meets your correctness and latency targets at lower total operating cost is the right choice for your system.
