A home theater receiver—also called an AV receiver or AVR—is the central component that connects audio and video sources, routes video to a TV or projector, and typically processes and amplifies audio for connected speakers. It is useful when you want a system with separately wired speakers and multiple components; it is not essential for every home theater setup.
What is a home theater receiver?
“Home theater receiver,” “AV receiver,” and “AVR” commonly describe the same kind of component. Denon describes an AVR as a system hub for connecting sources, speakers, and displays, while Yamaha explains how it distributes video and multichannel audio. Denon’s AVR guide and Yamaha’s explanation describe the role.
In practical terms, the receiver takes signals from devices such as a game console, disc player, cable box, or streaming device. You select a source, and the receiver sends video toward the display while handling audio for the speaker system. Most AV receivers also contain amplification to drive connected speakers. An AV controller, by contrast, processes and routes signals but needs a separate power amplifier, as Denon explains in its guide to AV receivers.

- Connects and selects sources: It provides inputs for compatible audio/video devices and lets you choose which one to use.
- Routes video: It passes the selected video signal to a television or projector.
- Processes audio: It prepares sound for the speaker configuration and supported audio formats.
- Amplifies sound: Typically, its built-in amplifiers power the speakers connected to it.
The receiver is not the speaker package: it is a separate component that drives speakers, unless a particular product is sold as part of a bundle. Speaker layouts vary. Yamaha uses 5.1 and 7.2 as examples of multichannel configurations; those notations describe speaker and subwoofer arrangements, not a requirement for every system. Yamaha’s explainer discusses these examples.

Do you need an AV receiver for surround sound?
No. A TV paired with a soundbar can be a simpler way to improve TV audio. A receiver-based setup is a better fit when you want separately wired speakers, multiple connected components, or more control over a multichannel system. Denon outlines this distinction in its home theater guide.
Before choosing a receiver, check the system you plan to build rather than assuming every model supports the same connections or formats:

Yamaha and Denon both identify connections, system configuration, room, and features as factors in choosing an AVR. See Yamaha’s overview and Denon’s guide.

How does TV audio return over HDMI?
Audio Return Channel (ARC) and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) can send audio from a compatible TV back to a connected receiver over HDMI. This can let you hear audio from the TV’s built-in apps through the receiver and speakers. The TV, receiver or other home theater device, and HDMI cable must support the relevant ARC or eARC feature. Sony details this compatibility requirement in its HDMI ARC/eARC setup instructions. Support varies by model, so check the devices’ specifications rather than assuming that every receiver supports eARC or every audio format.
