Emporia Vue 3 is the clearest choice here for direct readings from multiple selected breaker circuits; Sense is the better fit if you want software to try to identify appliances from whole-home electrical data; and Schneider Electric Energy Monitor is worth considering if you already use Square D connected products. These systems measure and present energy use in different ways, so the right choice depends on whether you value circuit-level readings, device detection, or ecosystem integration. Those distinctions come from manufacturer documentation, not independent side-by-side testing.
How these three home energy monitors differ
| Product | What it monitors | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Schneider Electric Energy Monitor | Installs in the electrical panel and monitors energy use in real time. | Schneider identifies it as the successor to the Wiser Energy Home Power Monitor. Its official product information describes related control products but does not establish a comparable count of directly measured circuits or a current price. Schneider Electric |
| Sense Home Energy Monitor | Measures at the service mains and uses software to try to identify individual devices from their electrical signatures. | Detection may take time and may not identify every device. Sense lists a 1 MHz sampling rate as a technical specification; that figure alone does not demonstrate better real-world identification accuracy. Sense technical specifications Sense device detection |
| Emporia Vue 3 | Measures the mains and selected branch circuits, with readings in the Emporia app. | One Vue supports up to 16 branch-circuit sensors. Emporia states ±2% accuracy compared with utility-meter readings, but says the measurement is not revenue-grade. Emporia Vue 3 overview |
Which monitor fits your priorities?
Choose Emporia for direct readings from many selected circuits
If you want to see what specific breaker circuits are using, Emporia’s approach is the most directly documented of these three. You choose circuits to instrument, then view their readings alongside the mains in the app. A Vue supports up to 16 branch sensors, but check which sensor bundle is included and how many circuits you actually want to monitor.
Choose Sense for software-based appliance detection
Sense aims to identify some devices by analyzing whole-home electrical signals, rather than requiring a sensor on every appliance. That can be useful if you want an appliance-level picture without selecting and wiring many branch circuits. It is not guaranteed to identify every appliance: some detections may appear quickly, others may take weeks or months, and some devices may never be identified individually. Sense summarizes this limitation plainly: “Sense strives to improve detection with every home, but it’s not perfect.” Sense device detection

Schneider positions its Energy Monitor within the Square D connected-home ecosystem. Its product information describes Square D control relays for circuit-level control, which require the monitor, and Schneider X Series connected wiring devices for plug- and switch-level control, which do not require the monitor. Check the specific device and system compatibility before buying; the available Schneider product information does not provide a like-for-like circuit measurement count. Schneider Electric

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.
Can a monitor tell you which appliance is using electricity?
There are two different meanings of “track an appliance.” Sense tries to infer device activity from patterns in whole-home electrical data. Emporia’s branch sensors directly report the circuits you choose to instrument, which can show a circuit’s consumption but does not necessarily isolate each appliance on a shared circuit. Schneider’s cited product information describes panel monitoring and related controls, but does not establish comparable appliance-identification performance.
For a particular plug-in appliance, a compatible energy-monitoring smart plug can provide a more direct reading at the outlet. Sense also describes smart plugs as a way to track devices. Verify the plug’s compatibility with your monitor and whether the appliance is suitable for that plug; a smart plug is not a substitute for measuring a hardwired circuit. Sense device detection

Dedicated circuits, solar, and other add-ons
Sense dedicated-circuit monitoring
Sense Dedicated Circuit Monitoring supports up to two 120 V or 240 V circuits. It uses the monitor’s middle auxiliary port, which cannot simultaneously serve another listed purpose such as solar monitoring, generator monitoring, or 400 A split-service monitoring. If the port is already in use, check the configuration requirements before choosing this option. Sense strongly advises professional installation. Sense Dedicated Circuit Monitoring
Solar monitoring depends on wiring and sensor placement
Sense documents both solar sensors and algorithmic solar detection, and says solar sensors are more accurate in most cases. The appropriate setup depends on how the array is wired and whether the sensors cover it. In an October 2025 update, Sense described a parallel detection method for solar generation, variable-speed heat pumps, and electric vehicles that needs about 24 hours of data to start identifying those types; check Sense’s current documentation to confirm availability. Are the monitors equally accurate?
The available manufacturer information does not provide an independent, common-method test comparing these products in the same homes. Emporia’s ±2% figure is its stated comparison with utility-meter readings and is explicitly not revenue-grade. Sense’s 1 MHz sampling rate is a manufacturer specification, not a measure of appliance-detection success. Schneider’s available product information does not establish comparable circuit-level measurement details. Treat these as different feature descriptions, not evidence that one brand is categorically more accurate in real homes.
