The right cabinet pull is the one whose mounting holes match your cabinets, whose size suits the drawer or door it sits on, and whose finish works with the rest of the room’s hardware. Style matters, but it comes after fit: a handsome pull that lands in the wrong holes or looks oversized on a small drawer is the most common reason for a return.
This guide walks through the measurements to take, how to scale a pull to its drawer or door, how to compare styles and finishes, and what to check when you are drilling new holes or fitting pulls to paneled appliances. The sizing and installation advice comes from manufacturer guidance (Emtek and Amerock) and an Emtek 2025 hardware catalog. No independent durability testing or brand ranking is implied.
Measure mounting-hole spacing first
Cabinet pulls are sized in two different ways, and mixing them up is the most frequent ordering error. The first is center-to-center (C-to-C) spacing, the distance between the centers of the two mounting screws. The second is the overall length of the pull, which is the visible metal from end to end. Emtek’s installation guide states that C-to-C is the measurement that matters for mounting, and it is distinct from overall length (Emtek, “Where to Place Cabinet Hardware”).

- Remove the old pull and look at the two holes in the door or drawer front.
- Measure from the center of one hole to the center of the other, using a ruler or tape measure, not the outside edges of the holes.
- Buy a pull with the same C-to-C spacing. This lets you reuse both holes without drilling.
- If the new pull’s overall length is longer than the old one, that is expected; the screws, not the length, determine whether it attaches to the existing holes.
Laying out a new installation
For a new layout, choose the pull first and use its published mounting-hole spacing. Mark each hole location carefully, then double-check every measurement before drilling. A pre-measured drilling template or a cabinet hardware jig can keep the two holes level and evenly spaced across a row of drawers. Treat this as a separate decision from replacement: if you are not reusing existing holes, you are taking on the drilling work and its risk of misplacement.

Scale the pull to the drawer or door
Size is less about a single rule than about proportion. Emtek advises considering cabinet size and style when choosing hardware, and its style guide recommends longer pulls for larger cabinets and drawers (Emtek FAQ; Emtek, “Decorative Hardware Styles”).
Edge pulls follow a more specific rule. Amerock’s edge-pull category recommends a length of no more than half the drawer width or one third of the door height (Amerock, edge pull category). Applied to two common cases:

Apply the edge-pull rule only to edge pulls. It is not a universal sizing standard for bar, cup, or knob hardware.

| Appliance pull | Paneled dishwashers and refrigerators (Emtek 2025 price book) | Verify against the appliance panel and product-specific requirements (Emtek 2025 price book) |
Cup pulls are described as primarily a drawer-front style, so a cup pull on a door is outside that guidance rather than a violation of it. The Emtek style guide does not give a dimension for cup pulls.

Materials
Emtek lists stainless steel, brass, bronze, zinc, ceramic, wrought steel, and glass among the materials used in its cabinet hardware (Emtek FAQ). Material affects both look and feel, and the manufacturer material lists do not rank these materials for durability.
Finish coordination
Pick the finish last, after you know the profile and size. Match it to the other hardware visible in the same sightline, such as hinges, faucets, and light fixtures, or deliberately contrast it. A pull finish that matches the cabinets’ surrounding metal will read as cohesive; a contrasting finish reads as a deliberate accent. Either works, but mixing several near-matching finishes in one room is what tends to look accidental.

Check screws against cabinet thickness
Emtek says it supplies two screw sizes with each knob or pull, and it advises that extra-thick doors or cabinets may require longer screws (Emtek FAQ). Measure the door or drawer-front thickness at the mounting holes, then confirm which screw sizes ship with the exact product. If the included screws are too short, you need a longer screw of the same thread, and a screw that is too long can protrude through the front of the door.
Paneled appliance pulls
If you are fitting pulls to a paneled dishwasher or refrigerator, Emtek’s 2025 cabinet and bath hardware price book describes appliance pulls for that purpose. It lists three mounting approaches: standard mounting, concealed-surface mounting, and back-to-back mounting (Emtek 2025 Cabinet & Bath Hardware Price Book). Because that catalog is dated 2025, confirm that the product is still offered and that it fits your specific appliance panel before ordering.
