Neither option is universally cheaper. A home battery gives one household direct use of stored energy, but the household faces the installed cost and needs a suitable property. A community battery may let eligible nearby customers benefit without buying a battery, but access and bill savings depend on the local project and retailer. Renters and people without solar should check local community-battery arrangements rather than assume they are automatically included.
How the two battery options differ
A home battery is installed at a household premises, usually to store rooftop solar for later use. A community battery is a larger shared asset connected to the local electricity system or operated through a local energy scheme. A distributor, council, community group, retailer or another party may own it. The label “community battery” does not by itself mean the community owns the asset, that participation is free, or that every nearby customer can draw stored energy.
| Question | Home battery | Community battery |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays for the asset? | The household pays the installed price, less any eligible incentive. Site work, system sizing and compatibility with existing equipment can affect the quote. | An owner, operator or grant may finance the project. Customers may not buy a physical share; the scheme determines any customer-facing price or bill benefit. |
| Who can use the stored energy? | The system serves the property where it is installed. | Access is local and project-specific. Being near a battery does not necessarily enroll a household. |
| How might it affect a bill? | It can store excess solar or low-price electricity for later use, potentially reducing grid purchases. | It may shift shared solar or provide network services; the household benefit depends on the retailer or project arrangement. |
| Can it provide backup? | Only if the system is configured for backup; it may not supply every circuit or load. | Do not assume it backs up individual homes. Confirm whether the project can island from the grid and what customer service it provides. |
| Who controls operation? | The household, unless it joins a virtual power plant (VPP), lease or other managed service. | The owner or operator schedules the asset under grid, retailer and project requirements. |
| What wider role can it play? | Distributed storage can reduce peak demand and support grid operation. | Shared storage may absorb local excess solar and help relieve local grid constraints; results depend on location and operation. |
Which is cheaper? Compare the right costs
There is no sound universal price comparison between a household purchase and a shared infrastructure project. A household needs an installed quote and a realistic estimate of bill effects. A community-battery project’s total cost is not necessarily the price its customers pay, and proximity does not establish that a customer receives a discount.

ARENA cautions that installation costs vary greatly and that its table does not show a project’s net value, including financial and non-financial benefits. In this comparison, “community battery” refers to battery size and does not necessarily mean the project delivers local community outcomes. The figures illustrate a wide spread; they do not establish which option will cost a particular household less.
Household payback is not a guarantee
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) reported an expected average Australian home-battery payback period of 8.3 years as at 2024, compared with 10 years in 2022 and 19 years in 2016. That is a market average, not a promise of return for an individual home. Australian Government energy guidance warns that bill savings may not cover a battery’s purchase cost within its warranted lifetime.

For a useful household estimate, compare a current installed quote with interval electricity use and the retailer’s import and export tariffs. Account for expected battery cycling, usable capacity, and the warranty. Solar arbitrage means storing surplus daytime solar for use when household demand exceeds solar generation; tariff arbitrage means charging when electricity is cheaper and using stored power when grid prices are higher. The value of either depends on usage, tariffs, system size and energy losses.

If you rent
A community battery may be an alternative to installing equipment at a home you do not own, but renting does not automatically qualify you to participate. Check whether a project serves your address, which customers may enroll, and how any benefit is credited. If you are considering a home installation, confirm property permission, site suitability and the installation arrangements before relying on that option.

If you do not have rooftop solar
DCCEEW’s national Community Batteries for Household Solar program describes access to renewable energy for people who cannot install panels as an intended benefit. A project may allow eligible customers to benefit through a retailer or local scheme, but the program aim is not a universal entitlement to stored energy. Ask the project or retailer how participation works and how the benefit reaches your bill.
Check whether a local project is operating and open to you
The national program is intended to install 400 batteries across Australia. DCCEEW’s live project listings show projects with different sponsors and operating dates, alongside projects still in progress. Examples displayed include Ausgrid’s Bondi project (412 kWh; operational from 25 June 2024), Endeavour Energy’s Bidwill project (440 kWh; from 8 April 2025), Energex’s Birkdale project (180 kWh; from 7 May 2025), and Noosa Shire Council’s Noosaville project (360 kWh; from 29 May 2026). These examples show deployments in several locations; they do not establish availability or eligibility for another address. Check the current program list because project status and listings can change.

What benefits and limits should you weigh?
Home storage
- It can shift surplus solar to evening use or shift grid purchases to lower-price periods, potentially reducing bills and grid dependence.
- Backup is conditional on configuration and system limits; do not assume every circuit or appliance will run during an outage.
- Site suitability, system sizing, existing solar and inverter equipment, installation, tariffs and operating arrangements affect the result.
Shared storage
- A community battery may absorb excess local solar, serve customers at peak times or help manage local grid constraints.
- DCCEEW lists lower bills, increased rooftop-solar uptake, renewable-energy access for people who cannot install panels, reduced grid pressure and lower emissions as program goals, not guaranteed results for every customer or project.
- The AER identifies potential customer and system benefits, while noting barriers including cost, limited access to some revenue streams and low consumer awareness. Electricity laws and rules vary with location, system features and operating model.
What to check before choosing
For a home battery
- Get an installed quote that reflects the site’s work, battery sizing and compatibility with existing solar and inverter equipment.
- Compare usable capacity, warranty, expected use, retailer tariffs and export compensation rather than relying on a headline capacity or payback estimate.
- Confirm the product and installer meet the current incentive rules, and specify which circuits, if any, are backed up.
- Read any VPP, lease or managed-service terms for control rights, customer obligations and how rewards are calculated.
For a community battery
- Identify the asset owner and operator, service area, eligible customer classes and whether the battery is operational.
- Ask what tariff, credit or other customer benefit applies, whether there is a contract term, and how the project handles data, control rights and complaints.
- Confirm the project actually serves your address; a nearby asset may operate for network purposes without enrolling every household in its vicinity.
How Australia’s home-battery discount works
As of 4 October 2026, the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program supports eligible small-scale systems from 5 kWh to 100 kWh with a discount of around 30% on upfront cost. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) says the program’s latest changes commenced on 1 May 2026. The discount is subject to usable-capacity calculations, eligible products and installations, certificate rules and the scheme’s current requirements. Eligible systems must connect to new or existing solar PV.

DCCEEW says the discount may be passed through by accredited sellers or installers, or claimed directly using the Renewable Energy Certificate Registry route. State and territory support may sometimes be compatible, but check the rules that apply locally. Do not assume a particular product or quote qualifies without checking the current official requirements.
Understand VPP control before signing up
A VPP coordinates multiple household batteries. Participation can add value, but it gives an operator control over participating batteries and does not remove the customer’s exposure to how well the operator performs. The ACCC’s 2026 inquiry release said households with batteries were achieving savings, particularly when connected to a VPP, while warning that VPPs are complex and customers bear much of the risk of operator performance and realizing benefits.
The ACCC also reported a 107 per cent rise in consumer reports about household batteries and new energy services over the previous 12 months. It described reports involving unsuitable systems, faulty installations, poor performance and difficulty resolving issues. Those reports support careful provider and contract checks; they do not show that every provider is unreliable. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said: “When customers join a virtual power plant, they hand over control of their battery to an operator and are rewarded for its use to support the broader system. It is important customers understand this when signing up to participate in a virtual power plant,” Ms Brakey said.
