PCMag’s October 1, 2026 holiday laptop guide names 11 recommendations in the available excerpt—not the 12 promised by its headline. The missing pick is not identified here, so this is a guide to the 11 models that can be verified from that excerpt, not a complete 12-laptop list. The cited prices are U.S. retailer listings shown on that date, not live quotes; check the exact configuration and current price before buying. PCMag
Start with the person’s main use
A useful laptop gift starts with the recipient’s workload, not the biggest specification number. For everyday work and school, prioritize a sensible performance tier, comfortable portability, and enough storage. For gaming or creative work, make sure the configuration is suited to the applications and games involved. For a laptop that will travel, weigh screen size against portability and treat battery-test results as comparisons, not promises.
- Everyday use or school: Compare the budget Windows and Mac options, or consider a Chromebook for a younger student.
- Frequent travel: Look at the HP OmniBook 5 14 and the reported battery test, while remembering that real-world runtime varies.
- Gaming: Choose between a high-end 18-inch system and a less expensive mainstream gaming configuration.
- Large screens and creative work: Match the display and processor tier to the work; video and 3D workloads call for more headroom than many photo-editing tasks.
The guide’s author says laptop prices were generally higher than six months earlier and attributes part of the change to a memory shortage. That is PCMag’s market framing, not an independently verified market statistic here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerified picks in the available excerpt
The prices below reproduce listings shown in PCMag’s October 1, 2026 excerpt. They may have changed, and the excerpt does not establish that every listed price is still available for the same configuration.

How to choose among the picks
For everyday work, students, and younger children
The excerpt positions the Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Neo as budget routes to a more premium-feeling Windows or Mac laptop. The XPS excerpt lists specific display and connectivity features; the Neo’s current price is not supplied, so compare live prices and storage on the exact models rather than assuming one is the better value. For a college student, PCMag’s pick is the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air. For a grade schooler, it recommends the Dell Chromebook 14 on ruggedness and schoolwork suitability, but the excerpt provides no durability test details.
For travel and long unplugged stretches
The HP OmniBook 5 14 is the mobility-oriented pick, with nearly 35 hours in PCMag’s rundown test. The Asus Zenbook A16 also has a reported battery result—more than 18 hours—but its larger OLED screen makes it a different size and use proposition. The excerpt does not give the test protocol, so neither figure guarantees a full day, much less a specific runtime, for an individual owner.

For gaming
The Razer Blade 18 is the high-end choice in this list: an 18-inch system with a dual-mode display and an excerpt price above $4,000. The Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10 is the mainstream alternative, pairing a 15.1-inch OLED with RTX graphics and i7 or i9 processor options. The excerpt does not specify the graphics-chip configurations or game performance, so confirm the exact GPU and configuration against the games the recipient plays before choosing.
For a large screen or creative work
The Asus Zenbook A16 is the straightforward large-screen pick; the Acer Aspire 16 AI is the excerpt’s lower-cost-category alternative, though it supplies no price for that Acer. The Zenbook Duo is for someone likely to use its two touch displays, not simply anyone who wants a larger screen. For demanding creative workloads, PCMag points to the MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Max and says video and 3D users should consider at least M5 Pro-level processing. The Asus ProArt P16 is the PC creative option, with Ryzen AI 9 and Nvidia graphics configurations and a 4K/120Hz OLED. Confirm the exact processor and graphics configuration for the intended software.

PCMag’s excerpt reports three model-specific rundown results: nearly 35 hours for the HP OmniBook 5 14, more than 18 hours for the Asus Zenbook A16, and 30 hours for the Asus Zenbook Duo (2026). These are results attributed to PCMag’s 2026 testing, not a guarantee of normal use. The excerpt does not provide enough methodology to compare those results with other labs or predict runtime during a particular mix of video calls, browsing, gaming, and screen brightness.
