1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRetrieval scope decides which memories are eligible to be found; retrieval strategy decides how the system finds and ranks relevant memories inside that boundary. If an application searches the wrong user, project, or customer memory bank, better relevance ranking cannot by itself ensure that results belong in the answer. Hindsight’s documentation describes isolated memory banks and several retrieval strategies, but the DEV Community listing for this title does not expose the author’s article body. The specific change and improvement behind its first-person claim therefore remain unverified.
What “retrieval scope” means
Scope is the boundary around the memories a search is allowed to consider. Depending on an application, that boundary might be a user, agent, project, customer, or another clearly defined entity. Ranking happens after that choice: it helps select and order candidates within the eligible set.
For example, imagine preparing a briefing for one customer while an application searches records belonging to several customers. A search might surface another customer’s pricing discussion. Restricting eligible memories to the intended customer can prevent that cross-customer result from being considered in the first place. This is an illustrative scenario, not a reported event from the article.
Hindsight’s official overview describes one isolated bank per user or agent. That is a product-documented boundary, not proof that every application using Hindsight maps identities or configures banks correctly. Verify the application’s actual bank selection and identity mapping before relying on isolation. Hindsight documentation

How Hindsight retrieves within a bank
Hindsight describes four retrieval strategies that address different kinds of queries. They operate within the selected memory bank; they do not replace choosing the correct bank.
| Strategy | Useful query shape | What it seeks |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic | A paraphrase or question about meaning | Memories related by meaning, even when they do not repeat the query’s exact wording. |
| Keyword/BM25 | An exact name, phrase, or technical term | Memories containing useful lexical matches. |
| Graph | A question about connected entities | Memories linked through relationships among people, projects, or other entities. |
| Temporal | A date, period, or sequence over time | Memories relevant to time expressions. |
The documented recall pipeline fuses results by rank, reranks them with a cross-encoder, and fits the selected information to a token budget. In practical terms, scope controls eligibility, the retrieval strategies find candidates, and fusion and reranking shape their order. The token budget then limits how much retrieved context can be passed onward. A strong ranking step cannot guarantee correct ownership if the application searched the wrong boundary; that is a design implication of the documented separation between banks and retrieval.

Choose the boundary before tuning relevance
Start by deciding which memories should be eligible for each request, then verify that the application consistently selects that boundary. In Hindsight, the documented choice is an isolated bank per user or agent. In another system, use the equivalent explicit scope rather than assuming that a generic search automatically respects customer or project boundaries.
- Define the entity that owns the memory, such as a user, agent, project, or customer.
- Map each request to the intended identity and memory bank; check the mapping rather than relying on a label alone.
- Keep distinct entities isolated when their information must not mix, and test requests that could otherwise retrieve similar facts across boundaries.
- After scope is correct, select or combine retrieval approaches according to the query’s shape.
Hindsight also documents that it extracts conversations into typed facts rather than storing conversations as-is: “Hindsight does not store conversations. It extracts what was said into typed facts and then builds on them:” Hindsight documentation, Overview. This describes the product’s memory representation; it does not establish how the unavailable article implemented its scope change.

Evaluate scope and retrieval separately
Test whether the system is searching the right memories separately from whether it can find the answer within those memories. A useful evaluation set should include:
- Boundary correctness: Are retrieved memories from the intended user, project, or customer?
- Answer relevance: Do the results contain information that answers the query?
- Leakage checks: Do queries return facts belonging to another entity?
- Query variety: Do tests cover paraphrases, exact terms, entity relationships, and date or range questions?
- Context fit: Does the retrieved information fit the available token budget without losing the facts needed for the answer?
