High-performance computing (HPC) can make graph analytics faster by spreading supported computations across GPUs or multiple machines. But fast algorithm execution alone does not make a system real time: updates must also be ingested, incorporated into the graph, processed, and delivered without unacceptable delay.

What “real time” means for graph analytics

A graph represents entities as vertices and their relationships as edges. Graph analytics applies algorithms to that structure—for example, PageRank to estimate the relative importance of vertices or community detection to identify groups.

For a changing graph, the useful measure is often update-to-result latency: the time from an incoming change to an output that reflects it. That interval can include ingestion, graph maintenance, data movement, computation, synchronization, and result delivery. Measuring only the time an algorithm spends running leaves out much of the work that determines whether results are timely.

There is no single latency threshold established here for “real time.” The right target depends on the application and workload: how quickly updates arrive, which results must be refreshed, and how stale an output can be before it stops being useful. A system that processes a large batch quickly may still be a poor fit for a continuous stream if it cannot incorporate changes efficiently.

How HPC can help—and where the time goes

Accelerating supported algorithms with GPUs

GPUs execute many operations in parallel. NVIDIA describes cuGraph as an open-source collection of GPU-accelerated graph analytics libraries, with a Python API designed to be familiar to NetworkX users and algorithms for single-GPU and multi-GPU use. It is a concrete option for accelerating supported graph workloads; the benefit depends on the algorithm, software release, graph, and hardware.

Graph workloads do not always map neatly to GPU parallelism. Traversing a graph can involve irregular memory access, and moving graph data between host memory and GPU memory—or across devices—takes time. If the graph or update process creates substantial transfers or coordination, those costs can eat into the computation saved by parallel execution.

Scaling across machines

Distributed-memory systems divide work among hosts so they can handle graphs or workloads that are too large or demanding for one machine. That adds communication and synchronization: workers may need information held by other workers and must coordinate as they make progress.

Pluto, described in a USENIX OSDI 2026 paper, explores ways to reduce those costs. Its authors identify full mirroring and bulk-synchronous execution as approaches used by many systems to limit network traffic, but note their memory and parallelism trade-offs. Pluto proposes static partial mirroring and a mirror-free architecture, including work migration intended to overlap communication with computation.

Maintaining a graph as updates arrive

A streaming system must do more than run an analytics algorithm. It has to incorporate changes—such as added or removed vertices and edges—into the graph representation while keeping results useful. Rebuilding graph structure too often can become a bottleneck and erase the advantage of faster computation.

A 2017 technical report by Mo Sha, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He, and Kian-Lee Tan examines this design problem for GPU-based dynamic graph analytics. It proposes dynamic storage and parallel update algorithms. The report is useful for understanding why update handling matters; its age means it should not be read as a current product ranking.

Which HPC approach fits which part of the workload?

Approach What it can contribute What to account for
GPU-accelerated analytics, such as cuGraph Parallel execution of supported graph algorithms on one or more GPUs. Algorithm support, irregular memory access, host-device transfers, and the cost of maintaining an up-to-date graph.
Distributed-memory analytics, such as Pluto’s research design Processing across hosts when graph size or workload calls for distributed resources. Network communication, synchronization, memory used for replicated data, and the effects of partitioning and work placement.
Streaming and dynamic graph processing Incorporating arriving changes rather than treating every analysis as a fresh static batch. Update rate, graph-maintenance work, and whether outputs must be continuously refreshed or can be computed in batches.
Mixed batch-online processing Combining live updates with historical catch-up, sometimes called backfilling. Whether the system can meet the live-update target while also processing the backlog.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive: a deployment may combine GPUs, multiple hosts, and streaming updates. The table describes roles and trade-offs, not a performance ranking.

What published performance figures do—and do not—show

In an October 13, 2023 technical blog, NVIDIA reported speedups of up to 188× for Louvain and PageRank tests in a TigerGraph/cuGraph integration. The described single-node configuration used NVIDIA A100 80GB GPUs, an AMD EPYC 7713 64-core CPU, and 512 GB of RAM. These are vendor-published results for those tests and that setup, not independently verified expectations for another graph, code path, or machine.

The OSDI 2026 Pluto paper reports up to 3.8× speedup for homogeneous graphs against its full-mirroring baseline, and up to 2.6× for labeled property graphs against its stated baseline. Those figures belong to Pluto’s evaluation and its named comparison points; they are not a general comparison of distributed graph systems.

Microsoft Research’s Naiad project page describes a historical data-parallel dataflow system for streaming and graph computation. It says Naiad could coordinate workers and establish that stages had completed “typically in less than a millisecond for our 64 machine cluster.” This is a system-specific statement about coordination on a 64-machine cluster, not a latency guarantee for a complete graph query or for modern deployments.

These results illustrate different systems, algorithms, graph classes, and measurement contexts. They do not establish a current, workload-matched comparison across platforms or a universally fastest approach.

  • Graph and update characteristics: state vertex and edge counts, directedness, degree distribution, labels or properties, and update rate. Results on one graph shape may not predict results on another.
  • Algorithm and correctness target: name the task—such as PageRank or community detection—and say whether the output is exact, incremental, or approximate.
  • Memory and placement: report graph size relative to host and GPU memory, where data resides, whether it is replicated, and what happens when it does not fit.
  • Communication and transfer: account for host-device transfers, network traffic, synchronization, and partitioning overhead alongside compute time.
  • Reproducibility: identify hardware and software versions, dataset, warm-up, run count, and precisely where timing starts and stops.

Pathway’s benchmark repository makes one useful workload distinction for PageRank: batch processing, streaming, and mixed batch-online processing (“backfilling”). Those modes test different demands; a streaming result alone does not establish how well a system catches up on historical data. As a project benchmark, its comparisons should be interpreted in light of the implementation, version, and conditions used.

Bottom line for system design

HPC is most useful when its parallel resources accelerate the work that actually limits the application. A GPU may help with a supported algorithm, while a distributed design may provide needed capacity; either can disappoint if updates, memory placement, communication, synchronization, or output delivery dominate. Define the required freshness first, then benchmark the whole update-to-result path on a representative graph and update stream.
