The HiFiMAN HE400i Ver.2020 is a compelling open-back planar headphone for home listening: it offers an expansive presentation, good detail and generally comfortable wear at HiFiMAN’s listed $169 price. Its trade-offs matter, though: it leaks sound, has less deep-bass weight than a bass-forward closed headphone, and independent reviewers have noted both a potentially sharp treble edge and hinge concerns.
What the HE400i Ver.2020 is—and who it suits
This is an over-ear, open-back planar-magnetic headphone. Its open construction lets sound escape and room noise in, making it best suited to a quiet home, desktop setup or critical listening. It is a poor fit for commuting, shared offices, recording situations that require isolation, or quiet public spaces. RTINGS likewise classifies the HE-400i primarily as a critical-listening headphone (RTINGS).
For the right listener, the appeal is a large, open presentation and planar detail without a high listed price. It makes less sense if you need privacy, strong passive isolation or substantial bass impact.

#1 Best Overall
- What is a planar headphone? What are its benefits over other designs? Planar headphones feature conductive layers that cover nearly the entire diaphragm, resulting in significantly lower distortion than conventional dynamic headphones.
- Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.
- Durable Connections The headphone’s drivers are protected by a newly designed casing for enhanced durability and protection from the elements. A dual-sided high-performance 3.5mm cable is packaged with a 6.35mm adapter for maximum compatibility with a wide range of devices.
- The HE400SE’s high sensitivity makes it the perfect match for low-voltage sources, including portable hi-res. audio players.
- Maximum Comfort for Hours of Listening Pleasure Thanks to its newly designed adjustable lightweight headband, the HE400se remains cool and comfortable for hours, even in excessively warm weather.
How the HE400i sounds
Bass: controlled, but not especially weighty down low
The overall presentation is open and detailed rather than bass-heavy. DIY-Audio-Heaven’s measurements on its test setup show bass beginning to roll off below roughly 70 Hz; that is an independent measurement observation, not a manufacturer specification, and it should not be treated as an exact response for every unit. In listening terms, expect less sub-bass presence than from a bass-emphasized closed headphone.
Midrange: a relaxed presentation
Independent measurements also show a dip from about 1–3 kHz. That region contributes to vocal presence and forwardness, so some listeners may find voices and instruments sound laid back rather than pushed toward the front. The degree of that impression depends on the recording and listener.

Treble: detail with a possible edge
The treble can bring out detail, but some listeners may hear an edge or sharpness, particularly with recordings that are already bright. If that bothers you, a modest equalizer adjustment may help; the right change depends on your ears and playback chain. DIY-Audio-Heaven’s measurements and Soundnews’s listening impressions provide useful context, but neither can predict every listener’s experience (DIY-Audio-Heaven measurements; Soundnews review).

Not necessarily. HiFiMAN specifies 35 ohms impedance and 93 dB sensitivity, figures that suggest a moderately easy electrical load, but they do not guarantee the same volume or dynamics from every phone, laptop, dongle or audio interface. One independent review recommends additional current or a medium-power amp/DAC for the best results (Soundnews).

Try your existing source first at a comfortable listening level. If it cannot play loudly enough without being turned all the way up, or sounds constrained at the level you want, a more capable headphone output or amp/DAC may be worthwhile. Amplification is a system-dependent option, not a required purchase established by the published specifications.
Comfort, build and ownership details
Comfort is a strength, with fit still personal
Soundnews praises the comfort of the updated design and large pads, and RTINGS also describes comfortable wear. The 370 g listed weight is worth considering if you are sensitive to heavier headphones; head shape, clamp and pad fit can change the experience. HiFiMAN’s manual lists earpads as included and says to use the HE400i with its earpads installed (HiFiMAN user manual).

- A Major Upgrade of the Popular Edition X: The new Edition XS expands on its predecessor’s achievements with several essential upgrades. Featuring Stealth Magnet Technology and the company’s NEO supernano Diaphragm, the Edition XS produces a wide, natural soundstage that puts the listener in the best seat in the house. Edition XS from HIFIMAN brings the depth and range of well-recorded music to an affordably priced headphone.
- Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet: Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.
- HIFIMAN’s NEO “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD): The new NsD is 75% thinner than previous designs, resulting in fast response and detailed imaging with lush, full range sonics.
- The Headband: The light weight, ergonomically accurate offers maximum comfort for hours of listening pleasure. The exterior is refined matte black material, and the interior features high-grade memory foam for the most comfortable fit and elasticity. The headphone’s structural design supports overall durability that retains its comfortable fit for years of enjoyment.
- The Cable: HIFIMAN’s new 3.5mm sockets are similar to those found on most common audio devices. The supplied 3.5mm cable is user changeable and replaceable.
Hinges deserve attention
RTINGS reported weak hinges on its tested unit. That is a durability caveat, not evidence of a universal defect rate or a guarantee that every pair will fail. Handle the headphone with care, and check the seller’s return and warranty terms before buying.
Check the connector before ordering a cable
The Ver.2020 uses a detachable cable, but the headphone-side connector has varied across HE400i production. HiFiMAN documented a move from screw-on connectors to 2.5 mm plug-in connectors and said performance did not change (HiFiMAN connector notice). The 3.5 mm / 6.35 mm figures on the Ver.2020 product page describe the supplied cable’s plug arrangement; they do not identify the headphone-side sockets. Before ordering a replacement, confirm your exact pair’s connector type and match it to the cable listing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the HE400i Ver.2020 worth it?
At HiFiMAN’s listed $169, it is a credible entry into open-back planar listening if your priorities are spaciousness, comfort and detail at home. It is not a universal bargain: an open design will not isolate you or people nearby, its bass is not especially deep, and the treble and hinge caveats may matter depending on your preferences and the individual unit.
Compare it with alternatives on the factors that change daily use: open spaciousness versus closed-back isolation, bass extension versus a relaxed midrange, comfort versus confidence in long-term construction, and the output capability of your existing source. Check the live price, stock, seller condition and warranty rather than assuming the listed price or terms will be the same everywhere.
