A hidden-gem game is overlooked by some audience; a cult classic has a devoted following that lasts over time. The labels describe different things, so a game can be both—and neither is an official industry category.
What makes a game a hidden gem?
“Hidden gem” is primarily a discovery label. It suggests that a game deserves more attention but has gone unnoticed by some players. The scope matters: a title may be little known among one platform’s audience or in one region while familiar to players elsewhere.

What makes a game a cult classic?
“Cult classic” is primarily a legacy and audience label. It describes a game with a committed niche following that remains attached over time, sometimes after the game had limited mainstream success or gained wider recognition later. It is not simply another way to say “rare” or “unpopular.”

A reference page cites EarthBound (1994), Psychonauts, and Alan Wake as games with cult followings. These are reported examples, not an official classification or a ranking agreed on by all players. How the labels differ

Can a game be both?
Yes. A game can remain overlooked by a broad public while sustaining a devoted niche community. In that case, “hidden gem” describes its limited reach and “cult classic” describes its durable following. A title might also become more widely discovered over time while keeping that following, so the first label fits less well even as the second still does.

Popularity is relative to region, platform, generation, and gaming community. Before applying either label, say whose awareness or following you mean rather than treating the terms as universal verdicts.
How to judge a game beyond the label
If you are deciding whether either description fits a particular game, look at four separate factors:

- Discovery: How widely known is it among the audience you mean, and on which platform or in which region?
- Following: Is there evidence of a persistent, engaged fan community, rather than a brief burst of attention?
- Recognition over time: Did wider attention grow after release, or has interest remained concentrated in a niche?
- Availability: Can you access it now, and on which edition or platform?
Availability is distinct from cultural standing. A 2023 explainer from the Video Game History Foundation and Software Preservation Network reports that 87 percent of classic games released in the United States are out of print. That figure covers classic games in that stated U.S. scope—not cult classics or hidden gems specifically—and does not establish whether any particular title can be accessed today.
