HEVCut is an iPhone photo and video utility that can compress media to reduce file sizes and help identify items you may want to remove. You can review suggested cleanup before confirming it, but cleanup does delete selected items; compression may replace a larger original with a smaller copy. HEVCut’s developer says those originals and deleted items remain recoverable in Photos’ Recently Deleted for 30 days.
What HEVCut does
HEVCut is an app, not a physical storage device. Apple’s US App Store listing identifies support for iPhone, iPad, and Mac and describes tools for compressing videos and photos, finding duplicates, cleaning up bursts, handling Live Photos, and identifying unwanted media. The app offers two distinct ways to address a crowded library: make selected media files smaller, or review candidates such as duplicates and unwanted items and choose whether to delete them. Those are different trade-offs, not a promise that every photo can be kept unchanged while storage is reclaimed.

What to know before you compress or remove media
Review each proposed change
Use the app’s review-and-confirm workflow to decide which files to compress or remove. If a photo or video is important, keep a separate backup before replacing or deleting it. A recovery window is useful, but it is not a substitute for a backup you control.

Understand the recovery claim
HEVCut’s website says replaced originals and deleted items can be recovered through Photos’ Recently Deleted for 30 days. That is the developer’s description of the workflow, not an independently verified result. Check Recently Deleted promptly if you change your mind.
Treat performance and privacy statements as developer claims
The developer says “Everything runs on-device” and says media is not uploaded. It also advertises a 70% average reduction in file size. No independent test or methodology is provided in the sources reviewed, so actual space savings, output quality, and privacy behavior should not be assumed from those statements alone. Does HEVCut free up iCloud storage?
The sources describe media compression and export, but do not establish exactly how every workflow affects iCloud storage or syncing. If your goal is to reduce an iCloud Photos plan’s usage rather than local device storage, check the app’s current workflow and verify the resulting library and iCloud storage usage before relying on it.

Availability and cost
Apple lists HEVCut as free with in-app purchases in the US App Store. The developer describes HEVCut Pro subscription and one-time purchase options, but current prices and offer terms are not established here.
