A continuous YouTube stream can use far less than or more than that allowance depending on its sustained bitrate. Hetzner bills excess usage rather than automatically stopping the stream; its 75% and 100% notices are alerts, not caps.
What Hetzner Cloud counts as traffic
Hetzner measures traffic by calendar month. Outgoing traffic counts toward the allowance; incoming and internal traffic are free, according to the Cloud billing FAQ. Some traffic between Cloud resources over public IPs can count as outgoing, so traffic between two servers is not automatically free.
For a YouTube stream sent directly from a Hetzner server, estimate the server’s outbound stream to YouTube. Do not add viewers’ playback traffic as though it necessarily leaves your Hetzner server: YouTube distributes the stream to viewers. A different relay or delivery architecture may have different traffic flows.
Included traffic depends on product family and location
Hetzner’s Traffic documentation, last changed May 21, 2024, lists allowances by Cloud family and location. The figures below are published allowances, not a promise about network throughput or stream stability.

Check the allowance for the exact server family, plan, and datacenter before estimating a bill. Do not assume that every Hetzner Cloud server includes 20 TB.
Estimate a stream’s monthly data use
For a first estimate, add the video and audio bitrates, then multiply by streaming duration. A convenient decimal approximation is:

Monthly GB ≈ total Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45
This is arithmetic based on a sustained bitrate and time, not a Hetzner-published statistic. One uninterrupted 30-day month is 720 hours, so each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 324 GB; a 10 Mbps stream uses about 3,240 GB, or 3.24 decimal TB, before protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, or other server egress.

Example: YouTube’s 1080p60 recommendations
YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. If held constant for all 720 hours of a 30-day month, those rates work out to approximately 3.89 TB and 5.51 TB, respectively. These are estimates, not guaranteed consumption; actual usage depends on the stream’s bitrate and duration.
- Find the video bitrate configured in the encoder and add the audio bitrate.
- Multiply the total Mbps by the expected streaming hours and by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB.
- Allow additional room for protocol overhead, reconnects, variable bitrate, and any other outgoing traffic from the server.
- Compare the estimate with the allowance for the exact Cloud plan and datacenter, then monitor account usage during the month.
What happens when you exceed the allowance
Hetzner bills excess Cloud traffic in 100 MB increments, rounding partial increments up. The Cloud billing FAQ says notifications are sent when usage reaches 75% and 100% of the allowance, but those notices do not throttle or stop traffic. They therefore help you monitor use, but do not prevent overage charges.

Overage rates can depend on location and current terms. The published information cited here establishes the billing increment but is not enough to calculate a specific customer’s final charge. Check Hetzner’s current plan and pricing information for the applicable rate.

A monthly quota tells you how much billable traffic is included; it does not establish sustained upload speed, uptime, or successful YouTube ingest. YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom in available upload bandwidth and recommends testing and monitoring stream health. When assessing a server for continuous streaming, consider both the location-specific traffic allowance and whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom. Use YouTube’s recommended settings as encoder guidance, not as a substitute for checking the plan’s quota or testing the actual connection.
