Choose Stardew Valley if you want to grow crops, care for animals, build relationships in a town, explore caves, and—on supported platforms—play co-op. Choose Hearth and Hamlet if you would rather assign workers, manage resources, build a medieval settlement, and steadily expand a kingdom. They share a cozy pixel-art look, but they are different kinds of games: Stardew Valley is a farm-life RPG; Hearth and Hamlet is an incremental citybuilder.
How the gameplay differs
Hearth and Hamlet: grow a settlement
Hearth and Hamlet starts with a campfire and builds toward a kingdom. Its loop centers on collecting food, wood, stone, and gold; assigning workers; constructing buildings; researching upgrades; setting laws and policies; trading with other lands; and developing magic. Steam describes it as a medieval citybuilder clicker with resource management, upgrade trees, and idle gameplay. Its listing specifies single-player, not multiplayer. See the Hearth and Hamlet Steam listing.

Stardew Valley: build a life on a farm
Stardew Valley begins with an inherited farm and the chance to make a new life in the valley. Its official feature list includes five farm layouts, crops, animals, orchards, and machines, alongside relationships with more than 30 residents. You can also fish, explore caves with monsters and treasure, and make more than 100 cooking and crafting recipes. See Stardew Valley’s official press page and factsheet.
The practical dividing line is settlement optimization versus farm-and-community role-playing. If you are looking specifically for a conventional farming loop, Stardew Valley is the direct fit; Hearth and Hamlet’s focus is managing a growing realm.

Multiplayer and social play
Stardew Valley combines its farm activities with town relationships, including dating and marriage options. Its official factsheet describes co-op for one to three invited players on supported platforms. The cited official page excludes mobile, PlayStation Vita, and Tesla from that co-op availability statement. Check the store page for the platform you plan to use, since support can vary.
