For everyday thirst, choose water or unsweetened flavored water—not an energy drink. If a child is tired or hungry, offer a snack and balanced meals; plain pasteurized milk and limited 100% juice can also fit into a child’s beverage choices. Energy drinks are not appropriate for children or teens, while sports drinks have only a narrow role during prolonged, vigorous activity.
Choose a drink for the situation

Why energy drinks are not a safe substitute
Energy drinks contain stimulants such as caffeine; some also include guarana or other stimulant ingredients. The American Academy of Pediatrics says these drinks pose potential health risks primarily because of their stimulants and should never be consumed by children and adolescents. Recommendations summarized by the AAPD in 2025 say there is no safe amount of caffeine for children under 18 and associate caffeine with poor sleep quality, increased blood pressure, depressive moods, and anxiety. “Sugar-free” does not make a caffeinated energy drink appropriate for a child: the concern is not only sugar, but also caffeine and other stimulants. Added vitamins likewise do not create a need for an energy drink. The 2025 recommendations summarized by the AAPD advise avoiding beverages with caffeine and other stimulants for those under 18.

Sports drinks are different—but usually unnecessary
Sports drinks may contain carbohydrates, minerals, and electrolytes. Energy drinks, by contrast, contain stimulants. The terms are not interchangeable: a child looking for hydration could mistakenly choose a caffeinated product if the categories are blurred. AAP clinical guidance.

For most children’s activity, water is the usual first choice before, during, and after exercise. Sports drinks may have a role for young athletes during prolonged, vigorous activity when rapid carbohydrate or electrolyte replacement is needed; they are not routine daily beverages. A drink cannot replace food when a child is hungry. The CDC puts it simply: “Sometimes a snack can give you as much of a boost as a drink.” The AAP also identifies balanced nutrition as the best source of the body’s energy needs.
