Blackwell Security announced a $13 million funding round on May 7, 2024, co-led by General Catalyst and Rally Ventures. The company said it would use the funding to expand its healthcare-focused Managed Healthcare Extended Detection and Response (MHXDR) service and broaden its U.S. offerings. Rally Ventures later reported that Ostra Security acquired Blackwell in 2025; that announcement does not establish whether Blackwell’s brand or services continue unchanged.

Who led Blackwell’s $13 million round?

General Catalyst and Rally Ventures co-led the round, according to Blackwell’s May 7, 2024 announcement. Fenwick, which represented Blackwell in the transaction, separately confirmed the $13 million round and its expansion plans.

What was the funding intended to support?

Blackwell said it planned to expand its Managed Healthcare Extended Detection and Response (MHXDR) offering and broaden its U.S. offerings. The company also described developing healthcare threat intelligence and automated-response capabilities. These were announced plans and product descriptions, not independently measured results.

How did Blackwell describe its cybersecurity service?

Blackwell positioned MHXDR as a managed-in-place service: it said it could work with healthcare organizations’ existing security tools rather than require a rip-and-replace program. The company said its approach aligned tactical security work with Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices (HICP) and the 405(d) program, and was designed to reduce analysts’ alert load while identifying and elevating threats to patient data and care delivery.

SecurityWeek’s 2024 report on the funding described an approach drawing on network, cloud, endpoint, email, data and clinical IoT security technologies from multiple vendors. It also reported that Blackwell offered managed detection and response, consulting and advisory services, and a 24×7 Cyber Fusion Center for monitoring and incident response. Those are details reported at the time, not confirmation of the company’s current service lineup.

Why did Blackwell emphasize healthcare context?

Healthcare organizations use complex technology environments and handle protected health information (PHI), so knowing where sensitive data resides can matter when investigating a security alert. In a MobiHealthNews interview, Jaclyn Miller, then Blackwell’s President and COO, argued that detection can be undermined when providers do not understand where PHI is located. She said that context helps investigators determine whether PHI was compromised.

That rationale explains Blackwell’s healthcare-specific positioning; it does not, by itself, demonstrate that the service detected threats more effectively than competing offerings. The announcement and reporting cited here provide no independent head-to-head results or outcome measures.

Who were Blackwell’s leaders when it announced the funding?

The company named Geyer Jones its first CEO in the funding announcement. It identified Jaclyn Miller as President and COO and Jason Lee as CIO. The announcement also cited Jones’s previous roles as COO at Cylera and Chief Strategy Officer at RSA. These are roles reported in 2024, not a verified current leadership roster.

Jones described the challenges ahead as including intricate regulations, vendor risks and legacy systems. General Catalyst advisor Stephen K. Klasko, M.D., M.B.A., compared cybersecurity preparedness to having “PPE” against threats to healthcare systems in the same announcement.

What happened to Blackwell after the funding round?

Rally Ventures’ portfolio page says Ostra Security acquired Blackwell in 2025. It does not say whether MHXDR continues under the Blackwell name, how customers were transitioned, or what services are currently available. The funding announcement and 2024 reporting therefore should not be treated as confirmation of present-day availability.

How large was the healthcare breach figure cited with the announcement?

General Catalyst’s company-creation story cited 4,419 data breaches involving 500 or more records reported to the HHS Office from 2009 through 2021, and noted that additional incidents may have gone unreported. This is General Catalyst’s historical figure, not a current annual rate or an independently verified tally in the reporting cited here.
