Use a headless browser for unattended automation in CI, containers, and servers; use a headful (or headed) browser when you need to watch a session, inspect the page, or debug interactively. For reliable teams, keep both: run the normal pipeline headless, then reproduce failures headed with the same browser, viewport, and user context.

What headless and headful mean

A headless browser runs without displaying a browser window. A headful browser displays the browser UI, so you can watch pages load and interact with them directly. The underlying distinction is whether the session has a visible window—not whether the browser is capable of rendering a page.

Both Playwright and Puppeteer launch headless by default. In either, set headless: false to launch a visible browser. Exact behavior can depend on which browser binary or channel you choose, particularly with Chrome’s distinct headless-shell option.

When to choose each mode

Choose headless for routine automation

Headless is usually the simplest fit for CI agents, containers, servers, scheduled jobs, screenshots, PDF generation, and unattended end-to-end tests. It avoids the need to manage a visible desktop session. Playwright documents headless browser execution in CI, and Chrome describes headless execution for servers, containers, and CI/CD.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Headless is a practical default for repeatable pipeline runs, but it is not automatically faster or more reliable for every workload. There is no broadly applicable official speed or memory figure for headless versus headful. Measure the specific browser binary and environment you plan to use.

Choose headful for development and diagnosis

A visible browser is useful while authoring tests, investigating selectors, inspecting layout, or stepping through an interaction. Playwright’s debugging tools include its Inspector, slowMo, and the DEBUG=pw:api environment variable; headed mode lets you watch the resulting actions.

Headful can also help investigate failures involving viewport size, fonts, GPU behavior, extensions, permissions, or user-context details. A headed reproduction is most informative when it matches the failing run’s browser channel, viewport, dependencies, and user context. If those differ, the comparison may point to an environmental difference rather than the mode itself.

Do headless and headful Chrome behave the same?

For modern Chrome, Google says, “Chrome now has unified Headless and headful modes.” Since Chrome 132, the older headless implementation is available as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. So the answer depends on the binary: modern unified Chrome headless is much closer to headed Chrome than the older, separate shell implementation.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Playwright’s browser guide distinguishes its regular Chromium build, used for headed operations, from a separate Chromium headless shell used by default in headless mode. It also documents selecting the chromium channel to use new headless mode—the real Chrome browser—which it describes as “more authentic, reliable, and offers more features.” Check your framework’s browser selection and channel rather than assuming every headless run uses the same implementation.

Puppeteer’s three practical choices

  • Modern headless Chrome: Puppeteer’s default headless mode.
  • Headful Chrome: Set headless: false to show the browser window.
  • Headless shell: Set headless: 'shell' to use the separate shell when its narrower feature set is acceptable and measured throughput is important.

Puppeteer describes the shell as performance-oriented when the full Chrome feature set is unnecessary. That is a qualitative qualification, not a general promise that it will outperform headful or modern headless Chrome for your application.

How to run headed browsers in CI

On Linux, a headed browser needs a display. Playwright’s CI documentation notes that headed Linux execution requires Xvfb, a virtual display server. If the job does not provide a display server, use headless mode or configure Xvfb for the headed run.

For everyday CI, keep the suite headless. When a failure needs visual inspection, run the smallest reproducer headed in an environment with a display server and preserve the failing run’s browser channel, viewport, dependencies, and user context. This separates useful visual diagnosis from changes that could make the reproduction unlike the original failure.

A practical workflow for debugging mode-specific failures

  1. Keep artifacts from the failing headless run. Retain traces, screenshots, video, console logs, and network logs so you can see what the browser did without rerunning immediately.
  2. Reduce the failure. Create the smallest test or script that still reproduces the issue; a focused reproducer is easier to compare than a full end-to-end suite.
  3. Match the environment. Use the same browser channel or binary, viewport, fonts, dependencies, permissions, and user context. Record which headless implementation is selected.
  4. Run the reproducer headed. Use the visible session to inspect page state and interaction timing. In Playwright, the Inspector, slowMo, and DEBUG=pw:api can help make actions and API calls easier to follow.
  5. Compare evidence, not just outcomes. Look at screenshots, traces, console output, and network activity. A test that passes headed and fails headless does not by itself prove headless mode is the cause; binary, display, timing, or environment differences may be responsible.
  6. Return the fix to the pipeline mode. Validate the final test in the same headless setup used by CI so a local headed-only pass does not mask a pipeline failure.

What to compare before choosing

Decision factor Question to ask Practical implication
Environment Will this run on a developer desktop, in CI, or in a container? Unattended server and pipeline jobs generally fit headless; headed Linux jobs need a display server such as Xvfb.
Browser fidelity Are you using modern unified Chrome headless or a separate shell binary? Confirm the actual channel or binary; “headless” does not identify a single implementation.
Observability Do you need to see the interface, inspect state, or slow actions down? Use headed mode for hands-on diagnosis; use traces and other artifacts to inspect unattended runs.
Reproducibility Are browser channel, viewport, fonts, dependencies, and user context held constant? Keep them aligned when comparing modes, or an environmental difference can confuse the diagnosis.
Throughput and cost Has the exact workload been measured with the intended binary and runner? There is no general official headless-versus-headful benchmark; test the workload rather than assuming a percentage gain.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Headless often reduces display-management work because it does not need a visible desktop session. That operational convenience is different from a guaranteed reduction in execution time, memory use, or infrastructure cost. No broadly applicable official benchmark establishes those savings across browser workloads.

If throughput matters, benchmark the exact tests, browser build, and CI environment you will run in production. A headless shell may be worth evaluating when its reduced feature set is acceptable; if browser fidelity is the priority, modern unified Chrome headless is the more relevant comparison. Keep the chosen binary consistent between benchmark and deployment.

For reliability, make the pipeline’s mode explicit and capture artifacts on failure. A headed local run is useful for observation, but it is not a substitute for validating the final test in the headless mode and environment used by CI.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website screenshot rather than operate a browser yourself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status.

Common problems and fixes

Headed Linux launch fails in CI

Likely cause: The runner has no display server. Fix: Run headless, or provide Xvfb for the headed Linux job.

The test passes headed but fails headless

Likely cause: The runs may not use the same browser binary, channel, viewport, dependencies, fonts, or user context. Fix: Align those conditions and inspect traces, screenshots, console output, and network logs before attributing the difference to browser mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Headless output differs from expectations

Likely cause: The framework may be using a headless shell rather than modern unified Chrome. Fix: Check the browser-selection setting. In Playwright, its browser guide documents the chromium channel for new headless mode; Puppeteer documents headless: 'shell' as a distinct choice.

Frequently asked questions

Should Playwright run headless or headed?

Use headless for the normal unattended CI run and headed for local development or visual debugging. Playwright launches headless by default; set headless: false when you need a visible browser.

Is headless Chrome faster?

Not as a universal rule supported by a general official benchmark. Puppeteer describes headless shell as performance-oriented when the complete Chrome feature set is unnecessary; measure your own workload before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does headed CI need extra setup on Linux?

A headed session needs a display. Playwright’s CI guidance says Linux headed execution requires Xvfb; an ordinary headless run does not need a visible desktop session.
