Use an HDMI splitter when one source needs to feed multiple displays. Count your sources and screens, then follow the signal direction: sources → switch → display, or source → splitter → displays.
How an HDMI switch and splitter differ
| Device | Signal direction | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI switch | Multiple sources → one display | Selects one source at a time for the display. For example, Leviton’s 41920-SW4 switches among four HDMI inputs to one output. Leviton 41920-SW4 |
| HDMI splitter | One source → multiple displays | Distributes one source signal to more than one output. Leviton’s 41920-SP4 has one input and four outputs; StarTech’s ST122HD20S is described as showing the same image and sound on two screens. Leviton 41920-SP4; StarTech ST122HD20S |
These are routing roles, not interchangeable names. An HDMI switch does not ordinarily send several independent sources to different screens, and a basic splitter does not let each screen choose its own source.
Choose by counting sources and displays
Several sources, one display: choose a switch
Use a switch if a console, set-top box, computer, or other HDMI source needs to share one TV or monitor. Choose enough inputs for the devices you want connected, and check the switch’s documented resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio, and control support. As a model-specific example, Leviton states that its 41920-SW4 supports 4K at 60Hz, 4:4:4, HDR, and 18Gbps; those specifications should not be assumed for other switches. Leviton 41920-SW4 specifications
One source, several displays: choose a splitter
Use a splitter when one device should feed multiple screens. Verify whether the particular model sends the same picture to all outputs simultaneously or instead lets you select which output is active. The word “splitter” alone does not establish which behavior a product offers: Anker’s guide describes a 1-in-2-out mode that toggles between two monitors, while the cited Leviton and StarTech products describe distribution to multiple displays. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the displays have different capabilities, check whether the splitter includes EDID management or scaling that will negotiate a mode both can use. Leviton documents EDID management and 4K-to-1080p downscaling for its 41920-SP4; these are features of that model, not a guarantee for splitters generally. Leviton 41920-SP4
Several sources and several displays: consider a matrix switch
If you want to route different sources to different screens, look for an HDMI matrix switch. Its routing capabilities determine which input can be sent to which output, so confirm that it supports the exact combinations you need. A simple switch or splitter is not necessarily capable of that independent routing. AV Access: HDMI splitter vs. switch

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
One source and one display: usually neither
For basic routing between one HDMI source and one display, neither a switch nor a splitter is needed.
Check compatibility across the whole HDMI path
A device’s label or maximum resolution does not tell you whether the complete setup will deliver the picture, refresh rate, HDR, and audio you expect. Check the source, switch or splitter, display, and cables together.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Confirm the exact combination you need, such as 4K at 60Hz, rather than relying on a resolution label alone.
- HDR, color format, and bandwidth: Verify support for the HDR and chroma or color format required by your devices, along with sufficient bandwidth.
- HDCP: Check that the source, routing device, and display support compatible HDCP versions, especially for protected video.
- Audio: Confirm the formats and features you need. If you require ARC or audio extraction, check for that support explicitly; it is not implied by the words “switch” or “splitter.”
- EDID and scaling: For a splitter connected to mixed displays, look for documented handling of differing display capabilities, such as EDID management or downscaling.
- Controls, power, and cabling: Check how inputs or outputs are selected, whether external power is required, and the cable requirements stated for the exact model.
Specifications vary substantially by model. For example, AV Access documents its 4KSP14-D splitter as supporting up to 4K at 30Hz with HDMI 1.4a and HDCP 1.4. Its FAQ contrasts that with a different model supporting up to 4K at 60Hz 4:4:4, HDMI 2.0b, HDCP 2.2, and auto-scaling. These are manufacturer-stated specifications for particular models, not independent test results or category-wide performance. AV Access model comparison

- Count the HDMI sources you want connected and the displays you want to use.
- If you have multiple sources and one display, choose a switch with enough inputs and the required signal support.
- If you have one source and multiple displays, choose a splitter only after confirming whether it mirrors to all screens at once or selects an output.
- If you have multiple sources and multiple displays, check matrix switches for the specific input-to-output routing you need.
- Compare the exact model’s resolution and refresh rate, HDR and color format, HDCP, audio features, EDID or scaling behavior, control method, power, and cable requirements.
Anker’s A83H1 user guide describes its switch mode as “Connect 2 HDMI sources to 1 HDMI display.” That wording describes the guide’s specific switch setup, not a universal definition for every HDMI switch. Anker A83H1 user guide
