HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) lets a TV send audio to a soundbar or AV receiver through the HDMI connection between them. That can carry sound from the TV’s built-in apps or devices connected to the TV, without a separate audio cable. Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) does the same job with support for higher-bandwidth audio formats.

What does HDMI ARC do?

ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. An HDMI connection normally carries audio and video to a TV; ARC enables audio to travel the other way as well—from the TV to an audio system. The TV is the source of this returned audio, and the soundbar or receiver is its destination.

This is useful when you want TV audio from built-in streaming apps or a device connected to the TV to play through an external audio system. With compatible equipment, one HDMI cable connects the TV and audio system for this purpose, rather than a separate optical or other audio cable. See HDMI’s ARC description and Sony’s connection guidance.

How is eARC different from ARC?

eARC means Enhanced Audio Return Channel. It retains ARC’s purpose—sending TV audio upstream to an audio system—but adds support for higher-bandwidth audio. HDMI Licensing Administrator lists eARC capability for audio up to 192 kHz and 24-bit, uncompressed 5.1- and 7.1-channel audio, and up to 32-channel uncompressed audio. Its listed formats include Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X.

These are capabilities of eARC, not a guarantee that every TV, receiver, source device, or streaming service will deliver each format. The connected products and the content must support the format in question. ARC does not provide eARC’s higher-bandwidth, uncompressed audio support. Details are on HDMI’s eARC page.

ARC vs. eARC at a glance

Feature ARC eARC
Full name Audio Return Channel Enhanced Audio Return Channel
Purpose Sends TV audio to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI Sends TV audio over HDMI with enhanced audio capability
Audio capability Does not provide eARC’s higher-bandwidth, uncompressed audio support HDMI lists high-bitrate formats, uncompressed 5.1- and 7.1-channel audio, and up to 32-channel uncompressed audio
Compatibility Requires ARC support on the relevant devices Not defined as backward compatible with ARC; some products support both
Cable guidance Follow the device manufacturers’ instructions HDMI says Ultra HDMI Cables are designed to support eARC; other cable types might work but may not be certified for it

What do you need to use ARC or eARC?

  • Compatible ports on both devices: The TV and soundbar or receiver must support the same return-channel option. Use the HDMI ports labeled ARC or eARC, as applicable, and check the manuals for the exact models.
  • A suitable HDMI cable: Follow both manufacturers’ cable guidance. HDMI says Ultra HDMI Cables are designed for eARC; other types might operate with eARC without being certified for it.
  • Support throughout the audio chain: An eARC connection alone does not make every source or program available in an advanced format. The TV, audio system, source, and content all affect what audio can be played.

Do not assume that eARC automatically works with an ARC-only audio system: eARC is not defined as backward compatible with ARC. Some manufacturers make devices that support both, so verify the specifications rather than relying on the port shape or HDMI version alone. HDMI’s eARC compatibility notes explain this distinction.

When does ARC matter?

ARC is relevant when you want a TV and external audio system to share one HDMI connection for audio return. If your equipment supports eARC and you need its higher-bandwidth format capabilities, eARC may be useful; whether you hear a particular format still depends on every device and the content. HDMI introduced ARC with HDMI 1.4 in 2009, according to its overview of getting the best sound from a TV.
