HDMI 2.2 is no longer an upcoming January release: HDMI Forum announced it on January 6, 2025, and released the specification on June 25, 2025. Its headline change is support for up to 96Gbps of bandwidth, along with higher-resolution and higher-refresh-rate video modes. Whether those capabilities matter to you depends on whether your source, display and cable all support the mode you want.

What is HDMI 2.2?

HDMI 2.2 is a version of the HDMI specification for connecting video and audio sources to displays and other AV equipment. HDMI Forum says its next-generation Fixed Rate Link technology enables bandwidth of up to 96Gbps—twice the 48Gbps maximum specified for HDMI 2.1-era systems.

That extra capacity is intended to accommodate demanding combinations of resolution, refresh rate, chroma and color depth. It does not mean every HDMI 2.2 device will output every listed mode: the source, display and connection must each support the particular capability.

What changed from HDMI 2.1?

Comparison HDMI 2.1 HDMI 2.2
Maximum bandwidth Up to 48Gbps, according to HDMI Forum materials cited for the HDMI 2.2 release. Up to 96Gbps, according to HDMI Forum, 2025.
Video modes highlighted by HDMI Forum Not stated in the supplied HDMI Forum information. Up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz; also uncompressed 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz with 4:4:4 chroma at 10-bit and 12-bit color, according to HDMI Forum, 2025.
Cable for maximum-bandwidth applications Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Ultra96 HDMI Cable, supporting up to 96Gbps and HDMI 2.2 applications; each model length must be tested and certified.
Audio/video synchronization Latency Indication Protocol is not identified in the supplied HDMI 2.1 comparison information. Adds Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve synchronization, particularly in multi-hop setups.
Compatibility Earlier HDMI generation. Backward compatible with earlier HDMI versions; older devices and cables do not thereby gain HDMI 2.2’s maximum modes.
Consumer device availability Not compared here. Current HDMI 2.2 consumer product models are not named in the official information summarized here.

HDMI Forum also lists Dynamic HDR, Source-Based Tone Mapping, eARC, VRR, ALLM, Quick Frame Transport, Quick Media Switching and HDMI Cable Power in its HDMI 2.2 overview. The specification includes familiar HDMI features as well as higher-bandwidth capabilities; the version number alone does not establish which features a particular product implements.

When did HDMI 2.2 come out?

HDMI Forum announced HDMI 2.2 on January 6, 2025, and formally released the specification on June 25, 2025. January was the announcement date, not the release date. A published specification also does not by itself mean that compatible TVs, graphics cards, receivers or soundbars are already available to buy.

Does HDMI 2.2 support 16K?

Yes. HDMI Forum lists support for video up to 16K at 60Hz, as well as up to 12K at 120Hz. It also specifies uncompressed 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz with 4:4:4 chroma at 10-bit and 12-bit color.

These are specification capabilities, not a promise that a given HDMI 2.2 product supports all of them. Check the source and display specifications for the exact resolution, refresh rate, chroma format and bit depth they support together.

Do you need an Ultra96 HDMI cable?

You need an Ultra96 cable for HDMI 2.2 applications that use bandwidth above what earlier cable categories support, including the specification’s maximum 96Gbps applications. You do not need one simply because your devices have HDMI 2.2 ports: if you are using a lower-bandwidth mode, the required cable depends on that mode and the equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI Forum says each Ultra96 cable model length must be tested and certified through the HDMI Cable Certification Program and display its Certification Label. When buying a cable for maximum-bandwidth use, check that the specific listing and cable carry the required label rather than relying only on a claim in the product title.

Will an HDMI 2.1 TV work with HDMI 2.2?

HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI versions, so an HDMI 2.2 source can connect to an older HDMI display using a compatible cable. The connection will be limited by the capabilities of the devices and cable in the chain; an HDMI 2.1 TV will not gain HDMI 2.2’s 96Gbps bandwidth or its highest listed video modes through a new cable alone.

Does HDMI 2.2 fix audio delay?

HDMI 2.2 adds Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which is designed to improve audio/video synchronization. HDMI Forum highlights multi-hop systems—such as a source routed through an AV receiver or soundbar to a television—as a particular use case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LIP is a protocol feature, not a guarantee that every delay problem will disappear. The relevant devices in the signal path need to support it, and HDMI Forum describes its purpose as improving synchronization rather than eliminating every possible cause of lip-sync issues.

What devices support HDMI 2.2?

The HDMI 2.2 specification was released in June 2025, but the official information summarized here does not identify current consumer TV, GPU, receiver or soundbar models that support it. Verify support in the exact product specifications before buying; a port described only as HDMI does not establish HDMI 2.2 support or a particular bandwidth.

HDMI Forum is an industry organization with more than 90 member companies, according to HDMI Licensing Administrator, 2025. Membership reflects the organization behind the specification, not confirmation that any particular member has released an HDMI 2.2 product.

Should you upgrade to HDMI 2.2?

HDMI 2.2 is most relevant if you need a supported video mode beyond HDMI 2.1’s 48Gbps ceiling, or if you are assembling a multi-device setup where LIP support can help synchronization. For existing equipment that already meets your needs, the specification’s higher ceiling alone is not a reason to replace a TV or cable. Before upgrading, confirm the exact mode and features supported by every device in the chain and the cable certification required for that bandwidth.
