It defines support for formats including uncompressed 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz, while compressed or subsampled modes can reach 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz and higher resolutions. The specification is real, but support depends on the source, display, receiver, implementation and cable. “Ultra96” identifies HDMI 2.2 products operating at 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps; it does not guarantee the top 96Gbps tier.
What HDMI 2.2 is
HDMI 2.2 is a technical specification from the HDMI Forum. The Forum announced it at CES on January 6, 2025, then made the specification available to HDMI 2.x Adopters on June 25, 2025. Those are separate milestones: January was the public announcement, while June was the specification release.
The main change is next-generation Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology with a stated maximum bandwidth of 96Gbps. Bandwidth is the capacity of the connection; it is not a guarantee that every HDMI 2.2 device can generate or display every format listed by the specification.
What formats HDMI 2.2 can carry
The HDMI Licensing Administrator’s June 2025 overview lists these examples. They describe specification capabilities, not measured performance from a particular television, graphics card or game console.

What LIP does
HDMI 2.2 adds the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). It is intended to improve audio-video synchronization, especially when signals pass through multiple devices such as a source, AV receiver or soundbar and display. The source devices can handle required audio or video delay more efficiently. LIP is not a promise that every lip-sync problem will disappear.

What “Ultra96” means
Ultra96 is a feature name that manufacturers are encouraged to use on HDMI 2.2 products whose maximum bandwidth is 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps. Therefore, an Ultra96 label alone does not tell you which of those three bandwidth levels a product supports.
HDMI Licensing Administrator guidance says products displaying the Ultra96 name require an Ultra96 cable to ensure their maximum bandwidth is supported. Check the product’s detailed specifications for its actual FRL rate and supported video modes rather than treating the name as a 96Gbps guarantee.

Ultra96 cable versus Ultra High Speed HDMI cable
| Characteristic | Ultra96 HDMI cable | Ultra High Speed HDMI cable |
|---|---|---|
| Applicable bandwidth | HDMI 2.2 applications up to 96Gbps | Configurations up to 48Gbps |
| Typical specification context | Supports HDMI 2.2’s 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps product tiers | Designed for earlier HDMI configurations covered by the Ultra High Speed program |
| Certification requirement | Every model and length must pass testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center | Must carry the applicable official certification for its designation |
| How to verify | Look for the certification label on the packaging or unit of sale and scan its QR code with a standard QR-code app | Check the official Ultra High Speed certification label and the cable’s stated model and length |
A cable’s marketing description is not enough. Reseller terminology can vary, so use the official certification label and scannable model verification. Cable length matters because certification applies to the specific model and length tested.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Only if your planned connection needs more than the up-to-48Gbps range covered by an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, or if the equipment manufacturer specifically requires an Ultra96 cable. Buying an Ultra96 cable cannot add HDMI 2.2 features to an older source, display or receiver.

Use this matching process
- Read the source specification. Check the graphics card, player, console or other source for its maximum resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, compression and FRL bandwidth.
- Read the display input specification. Confirm which HDMI input supports the desired mode; a television may have different capabilities on different ports.
- Check intermediate equipment. An AV receiver or soundbar in the signal path must support the same signal, or connect the source directly to the display and use a separate audio path where appropriate.
- Choose the cable tier. Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for configurations within 48Gbps. For an HDMI 2.2 configuration above that level, choose a certified Ultra96 cable.
- Verify the exact cable. Confirm the certification label, scan the QR code, and match the verified model and length to the cable you are buying.
Will HDMI 2.2 work with an existing TV, receiver or console?
HDMI is designed for interoperability at supported modes, but the available features are limited by the weakest component in the chain. An HDMI 2.2 source connected to an older display will not make that display accept 8K, 240Hz or other new modes. Likewise, an older cable or receiver can limit bandwidth even when the source and display are newer.
The official material does not provide a complete compatibility table for every legacy port and device combination. Do not assume that a port marked with a generic HDMI number supports a particular HDMI 2.2 feature. Consult the manufacturer’s manual or specification page for the exact port, mode, color format, refresh rate and audio path.

Common connection outcomes
- New source, old display: The connection may work at modes the display already supports, but HDMI 2.2-only modes will not appear.
- New source and display, older receiver: The receiver can become the bottleneck; bypass it for video if its inputs do not support the required bandwidth.
- HDMI 2.2 devices with an Ultra High Speed cable: Lower-bandwidth modes may work, but a mode requiring more than 48Gbps is not assured.
- Ultra96 cable with older devices: The cable is backward-compatible as a physical link, but it does not upgrade the connected equipment.
When will HDMI 2.2 devices be available?
The specification release is confirmed, but broad consumer availability is not. A September 2026 What Hi-Fi? report attributed to HDMI Licensing Administrator CEO and president Rob Tobias an expectation that devices supporting up to 96Gbps HDMI 2.2 would begin appearing in 2027. The report did not confirm which device categories would launch first.
That statement is a forecast, not a guaranteed release schedule or confirmation of a particular television, receiver, graphics card, console or cable. As of September 27, 2026, the cited sources do not establish mass-market availability of certified HDMI 2.2 devices or a specific Ultra96 cable listing.
What buyers can verify now
- Whether a product explicitly states HDMI 2.2 and identifies its maximum bandwidth: 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps.
- Whether the source and display both list the exact resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma and compression mode you need.
- Whether every receiver, switch, soundbar or other intermediate device supports that same mode.
- Whether a cable carries the official Ultra96 certification label and a QR code that verifies its model.
- Whether the cable length and model in the package match the certified information.
- Whether a claimed launch date is a manufacturer announcement rather than a retailer estimate or industry forecast.
The Bottom Line
HDMI 2.2 raises the specification ceiling to 96Gbps and introduces the Ultra96 cable designation, but the label does not guarantee 96Gbps operation. Until certified hardware becomes broadly available, match the source, display, intermediate equipment and cable by their documented bandwidth and exact video modes, and verify Ultra96 certification before buying.
