HDHomeRun turns a compatible TV signal—usually an antenna feed—into live television that compatible devices can watch over your home network. It can help you watch and record local broadcast channels without a traditional cable box, but it does not supply the signal, guarantee reception, or include every paid TV channel or streaming service.

How does HDHomeRun work?

Connect an antenna or another supported signal source to the HDHomeRun’s coaxial input. The tuner receives available channels and makes them accessible to compatible viewing devices on your home network. The antenna connects to the tuner by coax; the tuner connects to your network through your router. SiliconDust describes the system and supported signal types in its getting-started guide.

Think of HDHomeRun as a network-connected tuner, not an antenna, cable subscription, or TV service. The channels you can watch depend on the signal source, local availability, reception conditions, and compatible apps or clients. An antenna that works well in one home may not work as well in another.

Which HDHomeRun model should you choose?

SiliconDust’s US-facing product comparison lists three FLEX models. Tuner count is the key practical difference: tuners provide capacity to tune channels simultaneously, including for viewing and recording. Choose based on how much simultaneous use your household needs, rather than assuming more tuners improve reception.

Model Tuners Listed price What to consider
FLEX DUO 2 $109.99, listed by SiliconDust in 2026 A lower-cost option if two simultaneous tuners fit your household’s needs.
FLEX QUATRO 4 $149.99, listed by SiliconDust in 2026 Four tuners for more simultaneous channel use than the DUO.
FLEX 4K 4 total; 2 support ATSC 3.0 $199.99, listed by SiliconDust in 2026 Consider if ATSC 3.0 reception is useful where you live, while accounting for DRM limitations.

These are manufacturer-listed US prices, not guaranteed checkout prices or promises of future availability. Model features, prices, and the DRM notice appear on SiliconDust’s product comparison.

When does FLEX 4K make sense?

FLEX 4K is worth considering only after checking whether ATSC 3.0 broadcasts are available in your area and whether the channels you want are usable with the device. SiliconDust warns that some ATSC 3.0 channels may be DRM encrypted and will not work. Its product comparison says FLEX 4K uses the ATSC 1.0 version of a channel when one is available. This is the manufacturer’s disclosure, not a guarantee that every station or market will behave the same way.

What do you need to set up HDHomeRun?

  • A supported signal source, commonly a TV antenna suitable for your location.
  • An HDHomeRun device connected to the signal source by coaxial cable.
  • A home router and network connection for the tuner and compatible viewing devices.
  • A compatible HDHomeRun app or supported client for watching channels.
  • For recording, storage and DVR software; these are separate setup decisions.

The FLEX 4K shop listing describes viewing over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet through the existing home router. That describes how viewing devices can use the home network; it does not mean the tuner has built-in Wi-Fi. The tuner itself connects to the network through the router. See the official HDHomeRun setup guide index for device-specific instructions.

How do you get channels working?

  1. Check local reception. Review broadcast availability in your area and choose an antenna appropriate to your location. The HDHomeRun cannot create a signal that the antenna cannot receive.
  2. Connect the signal. Attach the antenna feed to the tuner’s coaxial input.
  3. Connect the network. Connect the tuner to your router so it can make channels available on the home network.
  4. Install a viewing app or client. Use an HDHomeRun app or another supported client on the device where you intend to watch.
  5. Scan for channels. Follow the device or app instructions to find channels received by the antenna.
  6. Decide whether to add DVR. If recording matters, select storage and configure DVR software separately.

How does HDHomeRun DVR work?

Live TV tuning and recording are distinct parts of the setup. To record, you need storage as well as DVR software. SiliconDust describes USB storage on FLEX devices, network storage, and third-party DVR options; the right choice depends on what equipment you already have and how you want to manage recordings.

  • USB storage: FLEX devices can use attached USB storage. SiliconDust’s FLEX 4K listing describes USB DVR storage.
  • Network storage: SiliconDust also describes using network storage, such as a NAS, for recordings.
  • DVR software: SiliconDust’s DVR feature and third-party DVR software are options, but app compatibility and features should be checked for the specific setup.

The current FLEX 4K listing says its basic DVR feature does not require a subscription; paid TV guide data supports advanced auto-record features. Check the current product details for the specific model and feature set before relying on a particular recording workflow.

Can HDHomeRun replace cable?

It can replace some paid-TV viewing if the channels you want are available over the air and reception is adequate. It does not establish access to every cable channel, live sports package, or streaming subscription. Decide based on the particular channels and programs your household watches: antenna TV can cover local broadcasts, while other viewing may still require a separate service.
