HDFC Bank is much larger and reported stronger capital ratios and return on assets than YES Bank on the latest measures available here. YES Bank has reported improving profitability and asset quality, but its funding mix and ability to grow retail and SME lending while controlling credit stress remain important considerations. Those business comparisons do not show which stock is cheaper or likely to perform better; that requires matched market prices and valuation measures.
Start with the business, then assess the stock price
Bank size and stock attractiveness are different questions. Deposits, loans and absolute profits describe scale; ratios help compare performance, while valuation measures connect that performance to what investors are paying. A stronger operating profile does not by itself make a stock a better buy: expectations may already be reflected in its price, and future results can differ.
The latest broadly comparable balance-sheet snapshot identified here is June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27). Annual profitability figures below are for FY26. HDFC Bank figures are bank disclosures; the YES Bank balance-sheet and risk commentary cited below comes from CRISIL Ratings, rather than a directly matched set of YES Bank disclosures. Where definitions differ, the measures should not be treated as perfectly like-for-like.

How do their size and growth compare?
HDFC Bank is substantially larger. To make the reported balances easier to compare, the table expresses HDFC Bank’s figures in crore: ₹1 billion equals ₹100 crore. The advances figures still use different definitions—HDFC reported gross advances and CRISIL reported YES Bank net advances—so they are not an exact like-for-like size comparison.

| Measure at June 30, 2026 | HDFC Bank | YES Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Advances | ₹30,608 billion (₹30,60,800 crore) gross advances; up 15.4% year over year. Advances under management grew 12.4%. HDFC Bank Q1 FY27 filing | ₹2,85,118 crore net advances; up about 18% year over year. CRISIL Ratings, August 4, 2026 |
| Deposits | ₹31,708 billion (₹31,70,800 crore); up 14.7% year over year. HDFC Bank Q1 FY27 filing | ₹3,15,373 crore; up about 14% year over year. CRISIL Ratings, August 4, 2026 |
The reported advances and deposit balances make the scale difference clear, even though gross and net advances should not be used to calculate a precise size multiple. Growth rates answer a different question: how quickly a bank’s book is expanding. Faster growth does not automatically mean better growth; it needs to be assessed alongside funding costs, borrower mix, credit quality and returns.
What do deposits and funding tell you?
Deposits fund lending, but a CASA ratio—the share of current and savings account deposits—is only one part of the funding picture. Growth, depositor mix, the cost of deposits and reliance on other funding all matter. A high or similar CASA percentage is not, on its own, a verdict on funding strength.

- HDFC Bank: Deposits grew 14.7% year over year at June 30, 2026, while CASA deposits grew 9.4%; CASA was 32.3% of deposits. Time deposits therefore grew faster than CASA deposits over the year, making deposit mix and funding costs worth monitoring. These figures are from HDFC Bank’s Q1 FY27 filing.
- YES Bank: CRISIL reported a 32.7% CASA ratio at June 30, 2026, down from 35.1% on March 31, 2026. Retail term deposits plus CASA made up about 65% of total deposits, while non-deposit funding was 18% of total funding. CRISIL described deposit stability and granularity as positive developments, while noting that non-deposit funding remained higher than at larger private-bank peers. See CRISIL’s August 4, 2026 rationale.
When comparing future disclosures, look for whether deposit growth is keeping pace with lending, how the bank is attracting deposits, and whether the funding mix is changing. CASA should be read together with those indicators, not treated as a standalone quality score.

How should you read asset-quality figures?
Non-performing asset ratios are snapshots of recognized problem loans, not complete forecasts of future losses. They can be affected by portfolio composition and reporting definitions. Read them alongside slippages (loans newly turning impaired), provisions, credit costs, recoveries and the segments contributing stress.
| June 30, 2026 measure | HDFC Bank | YES Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Gross NPA ratio | 1.17% of gross advances. HDFC also disclosed 0.91% excluding agricultural-segment NPAs; that adjusted figure should not be compared with another bank’s unadjusted headline ratio. HDFC Bank Q1 FY27 filing | 1.3%, unchanged quarter over quarter. CRISIL said it had declined from 1.6% at March 31, 2025. CRISIL Ratings, August 4, 2026 |
| Net NPA ratio | 0.41% of net advances. HDFC Bank Q1 FY27 filing | Not stated in the cited June 2026 CRISIL figures. |
On the reported headline gross NPA ratios, HDFC Bank’s was modestly lower on this date. That difference alone does not establish which loan book is safer: the definitions, composition and flow of newly stressed loans matter. CRISIL noted that YES Bank’s FY26 slippages improved, but retail slippages—particularly in personal loans—remained a monitorable.
What do capital and profitability indicate?
Capital ratios give context on a bank’s capacity to absorb losses, but they are not stock-return forecasts. Profitability measures show how effectively a bank is generating returns from its assets or equity; use matching periods and definitions when comparing them.

| CET1 at June 30, 2026 | 17.4%. HDFC reported a total capital adequacy ratio of 19.6%, Tier 1 CAR of 17.8% and a regulatory requirement of 11.9%. HDFC Bank Q1 FY27 filing | 14.0%; Tier 1 was 14.0% and total capital adequacy was 15.1%. CRISIL also discussed possible CET1 sensitivity to the unresolved AT-I bond write-off matter. | FY26 return on average assets (RoA) | 1.94%. HDFC Bank FY26 filing | 0.8%; YES Bank also reported FY26 return on equity (RoE) of 7.0%. Its Q4 FY26 RoA was 1.0%. YES Bank FY26 results and investor presentation |
The FY26 RoA figures show a profitability gap on the measures reported. YES Bank’s improvement is from a lower base; CRISIL identifies scaling retail and SME portfolios while maintaining asset quality as an important execution test. The bank’s FY26 release attributes the following statement to Managing Director and CEO Vinay M. Tonse: “YES BANK concluded FY26 on a strong footing, delivering a Q4 RoA of 1.0% in line with our guidance, supported by a 20 bps improvement in NIMs, improvement in Cost to Income ratio and the lowest GNPA and NNPA levels since FY20.” This is management’s characterization, not an independent assessment. The operating figures above do not establish which stock is cheap or expensive. A useful valuation comparison needs HDFC Bank and YES Bank prices from the same trading session, matched with consistent financial bases. No matched closing prices or verified P/E and price-to-book (P/B) comparison is established here, so a current valuation verdict would not be supported.
Best Value
- Choose one market date. Use closing prices from the same trading session for both stocks; otherwise market movements can distort the comparison.
- Compare like with like. P/B relates market price to book value per share, while a P/E multiple relates price to earnings per share. Check whether each figure uses standalone or consolidated results and the same reporting period; identify any extraordinary items rather than treating them as recurring earnings.
- Check per-share adjustments. HDFC Bank’s FY26 filing says its bonus share issuance is reflected retrospectively in per-share data. Make sure price, earnings per share and book value per share are on a consistent basis. HDFC Bank FY26 filing
- Interpret the multiple against the business. Ask what profitability, growth, funding stability and credit performance the market price appears to assume. A lower multiple by itself does not show that a bank is undervalued or that its shares will outperform.
Which risks should change your comparison?
Use the following questions to test whether the apparent differences are durable or exposed to change:
- YES Bank’s execution: Can it expand retail and SME lending while keeping asset quality sound? CRISIL flags this as important and identifies retail loan slippages, especially personal loans, as a monitorable.
- YES Bank’s funding and capital: How does its funding mix evolve, given the 18% non-deposit funding share CRISIL reported for June 2026? What is the eventual effect, if any, of the unresolved AT-I bond write-off matter on CET1? CRISIL discusses potential sensitivity, not a quantified outcome.
- HDFC Bank’s deposit mix: Do deposits continue to support lending growth at an acceptable cost as time deposits grow faster than CASA deposits? The reported mix is a point to monitor, not by itself evidence of a funding problem.
- Comparability of disclosures: Check whether figures are gross or net, standalone or consolidated, and end-period or average balances before drawing conclusions. Differences in definitions can make a neat-looking comparison misleading.
- Market and regulatory changes: Interest rates, competitive deposit pricing, credit costs, regulation, governance and investor expectations can alter earnings or the valuation investors assign to them.
A practical way to reach your own view
Keep the analysis in three layers rather than letting one impressive ratio decide the outcome:
- Business profile: Compare scale and growth, then examine deposit mix and funding reliance.
- Resilience and returns: Review asset-quality flows as well as NPA snapshots, capital ratios, and profitability for the same period.
- Price paid: Add same-date P/B and P/E measures on consistent per-share and earnings bases, then decide whether the valuation compensates for the risks you identified.
That framework can clarify the trade-offs between these banks, but it cannot guarantee how either share will perform.
