Cryptographic hash rate is how many cryptographic hash calculations a processor can perform per second. In Bitcoin, it describes either one miner’s computation rate or an estimate of the combined computing power devoted to mining across the network.
What is hash rate?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines hash rate as “The number of cryptographic hash functions a processor can calculate in a given time, usually denominated as hashes per second.” In plain terms, it measures the pace of hash calculations—not how many distinct transactions a device handles. See the NIST glossary definition.
What do hash-rate units mean?
The base unit is hashes per second (H/s). Larger prefixes make very high rates easier to express:
- Th/s: trillions of calculations per second
- Ph/s: quadrillions of calculations per second
- Eh/s: quintillions of calculations per second
These are unit scales, not current estimates of a network’s computing power. Bitcoin.org lists these common units in its Bitcoin glossary.

Device hash rate and network hash rate are different
A device or miner’s hash rate refers to its own computation rate. A network hash rate refers to the combined mining computation across a proof-of-work network. Because a network does not ordinarily publish a verifiable, real-time count of every miner’s calculations, network figures are estimates rather than direct measurements of each machine.
How is network hash rate estimated?
One documented approach infers a network rate from mining difficulty and observed block intervals. Coin Metrics’ block_hashrate_mean_1d metric uses the preceding 24 hours and is described as a sliding one-day average. The result therefore depends on both the estimation method and the observation window; figures from different providers may not be directly comparable unless their intervals and methods match. See Coin Metrics’ hash-rate methodology.

Block arrivals are variable, so a shorter observation window is more affected by random variation than a longer one. A study by A. Pinar Ozisik, George Bissias, and Brian Levine found that estimates based on published blocks require no miner cooperation but are less accurate than estimates that also use miner status reports; it also notes that miners’ rates can change dynamically. The study is available at arXiv.
What hash rate does—and does not—tell you
In Bitcoin, hash rate is a mining and proof-of-work measure. It counts computation attempts per second; it is not transaction throughput and does not guarantee that a particular transaction will confirm faster. For historical or cross-provider comparisons, check the chain, unit, scope, time interval, and estimation method. Also account for protocol changes: Coin Metrics’ Ethereum hash-rate data is historical, from before Ethereum’s transition to proof of stake at the Merge.
