A three-year-old tigress identified as T138 has been released into the core zone of Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal after being brought from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026. The release is a conservation intervention, not proof that Buxa has regained a stable tiger population: officials plan to monitor the animal’s movement, health and behaviour.
Has the tiger returned to Buxa?
A tigress has been released in Buxa, but that is not the same as confirming a recovered resident population. Hindustan Times described the event as Buxa’s first tiger reintroduction and said it ended an eight-year absence. Those are the outlet’s characterizations; its report does not provide an official release record or a detailed population series.
The distinction matters because a release records an intervention, while recovery would require evidence that tigers survive, adapt and persist in the landscape over time. The report says monitoring is planned to assess the tigress, but it does not establish that she has settled or that Buxa’s population has rebounded.
Where did the tigress released in Buxa come from?
Hindustan Times identified the animal as T138, a three-year-old tigress transferred from Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar and released in Buxa’s core zone. The report said Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari were present.

Yadav wrote on X, as quoted by Hindustan Times: “Inspired by PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s push for landscape conservation and species protection, today we have fulfilled the significant promise to reintroduce tiger in Buxa. T138 has been brought from Valmiki Tiger Reserve from Bihar to Buxa,”
Why had Buxa not had tigers for eight years?
The report attributed the decline to an unnamed official who cited habitat degradation and fragmentation, land-use changes and declining prey availability. The official also said experts believed Buxa’s tigers had moved to Manas. These are explanations reported by Hindustan Times, not a definitive account of a single cause or a verified history of every tiger’s movement.

The report describes Buxa as contiguous with Bhutan’s Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary and Assam’s Manas National Park, forming an international wildlife corridor. It says the reserve was created in 1983. Hindustan Times also reported habitat work, including restored grasslands and the release of more than 870 chital deer to increase the prey base. These reported actions do not, by themselves, demonstrate that habitat conditions or prey numbers are now sufficient to sustain a tiger population.

What evidence of tigers has been reported at Buxa?
Hindustan Times said camera traps recorded tigers in 2021, 2023 and 2026. It also reported that a tiger photographed in 2023 was matched with one from Manas Tiger Reserve. Detection in a camera-trap image is not a population estimate: the report does not provide the underlying monitoring records, survey methods or a count that would show how many tigers were resident in Buxa in those years.
How will T138 be tracked?
According to the report, monitoring will combine telemetry, camera trapping and field observation. The stated purpose is to track the tigress’s movement, adaptation, health and behaviour. Those observations can help authorities assess how she is faring, but no outcome of that monitoring is available in the October 2 report.
Are more tigers being released in Buxa?
Adhikari told Hindustan Times that “Three more tigers will be released in the BTR in the next two months,” referring to Buxa Tiger Reserve. This is an announced plan, not confirmation that the additional releases have taken place.

What is the separate forest-destination proposal?
Adhikari also said the state had received a Centre proposal to identify around 2,000 acres next to Buxa and Manas for a proposed forest destination. The report describes a proposal to identify land; it does not say the project has been approved or built. It is separate from T138’s release.
