No—not automatically. Microsoft ended support for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2, but that did not invalidate every query or application written for them. Older code may still run on a newer SQL Server, although compatibility depends on the workload, features, drivers, and configuration. The practical task is to assess and test the system before migrating it.

What Microsoft deprecated—and what it did not

SQL Server 2008 was a server product, not a date-based category of SQL statements. Microsoft’s lifecycle record lists the product’s mainstream support end date as July 9, 2014, and its extended support end date as July 10, 2019: SQL Server 2008 lifecycle. SQL Server 2008 R2 reached the same endpoints: SQL Server 2008 R2 lifecycle.

Those dates mark the end of Microsoft’s normal product support and updates; they do not mean working queries were deleted or all code written in 2008 became invalid. Microsoft’s SQL Server team marked July 9, 2019 as the final support day for both releases: SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 end of support.

Microsoft describes a general lifecycle model of five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support: Fixed Lifecycle Policy. The end of that lifecycle is a product-support status, not a blanket deprecation notice for every SQL statement.

Will SQL Server 2008 queries run on SQL Server 2019 or 2022?

Some may run unchanged, but the lifecycle dates alone cannot establish whether a particular workload will. Newer SQL Server versions can preserve compatibility behavior, while specific features, data types, drivers, operating-system assumptions, or configuration choices may need attention. Compatibility certification can help move an application to a supported SQL Server version while maintaining its functionality with virtually no code changes, but that is not a guarantee for every system.

There is no authoritative universal percentage for how many SQL Server 2008 statements fail after migration. The answer depends on the code and its surrounding environment, so a migration decision should be based on assessment and testing rather than a general failure-rate estimate.

How to assess and migrate an older SQL Server workload

  1. Inventory the whole system. Record the SQL Server version, edition, service pack, compatibility level, drivers, linked servers, jobs, CLR components, SSIS and SSRS dependencies, and operating-system constraints. The application’s dependencies matter as much as its query text.
  2. Assess the actual workload. Use Microsoft’s compatibility and migration assessment tools before selecting a target. Identify specific incompatibilities or configuration assumptions; do not treat all legacy SQL code as equally risky.
  3. Select a supported target that fits the deployment. Options include a supported SQL Server release or an Azure target. Microsoft names Azure Data Migration Service and Azure virtual machines as migration options: SQL Server migration guidance. Compare deployment model, feature coverage, operating-system and driver dependencies, security and update responsibilities, licensing, downtime, and the skills needed to operate the target.
  4. Test representative behavior before cutover. Exercise queries, stored procedures, ETL, reports, permissions, performance plans, and application connection behavior in the target environment. Resolve observed issues and validate the application before switching production traffic.

What about security updates after support ended?

Microsoft’s lifecycle listings show Azure-only Extended Security Updates for SQL Server 2008 releases through July 2023: Extended Security Updates FAQ. That period has passed. It should not be mistaken for ongoing standard support or for evidence that an on-premises installation still receives normal product updates.

How to evaluate claims that all SQL Server 2008 code is deprecated

  • Ask which exact syntax, feature, data type, driver, or configuration is said to be deprecated.
  • Look for a specific Microsoft deprecation notice or migration finding tied to that item.
  • Distinguish a product reaching end of support from a feature being deprecated or removed.
  • Verify behavior against the intended target version using the real application workload.
