Samsung’s Galaxy phones show what Android can look like when a manufacturer builds a detailed interface and app layer around its own devices. One UI adds Galaxy-focused workflows for notes, S Pen use, and system customization—while Google continues developing Android and its apps remain available on Galaxy phones. The real choice is less “Samsung or Google” than which apps and defaults fit the way you use your phone.
What “lazy” means in this Android debate
Calling Google “lazy” is a judgment, not a fact established by product documentation. The more defensible criticism is that Google’s Android experience can leave device-specific details to manufacturers. Samsung fills that space with One UI, its interface and app layer for Galaxy devices. Google, meanwhile, continues to announce Android features, including features associated with Android 16 (Google’s Android feature information).
That distinction matters: One UI is not a replacement operating system that proves Google has stopped working. It is Samsung’s approach to shaping Android around Galaxy hardware and services. Samsung describes One UI Home as the home-screen layer for Galaxy phones and tablets, where users arrange apps and widgets (Samsung support: One UI Home; Samsung developer documentation).

Where Samsung’s apps make a device-specific case
Samsung Notes and S Pen workflows
Samsung Notes is a natural fit for people who take handwritten notes or annotate material with an S Pen on a compatible Galaxy device. Samsung’s support material covers Notes and S Pen use, while its One UI feature information describes capabilities such as shared-note collaboration (Samsung support; Samsung One UI features). These are documented features, not independent evidence that Notes is better for every note-taking task.
#1 Best Overall
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
The practical advantage is the connection to Galaxy hardware and software: if you already use a compatible S Pen device, a note workflow designed around that input can be more convenient than choosing a general-purpose app first. If your priorities are different—such as using the same notes across several platforms—compare how each app works with the devices and accounts you actually use.
Notes collaboration and text extraction
Samsung’s One UI feature materials also describe collaboration on shared notes and text extraction in Samsung apps, including Samsung Internet and Gallery (Samsung One UI features). These examples show Samsung extending its apps beyond basic note-taking and browsing: a user can work with content inside the Galaxy app environment rather than treating every task as separate.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Availability can depend on the Galaxy model, software release, app version, and region. Check Samsung’s current compatibility details for your device before choosing a phone or relying on a particular feature.
Samsung Internet and Galaxy-specific integrations
Samsung Internet is another example of a manufacturer investing in an app that fits its own services. Samsung’s One UI 7 material describes a route for adding supported boarding passes from Samsung Internet to Samsung Wallet (Samsung One UI 7). Samsung also describes Internet features in its One UI 6 materials, alongside Notes capabilities; that page credits Google for Circle to Search, a useful reminder that features can cross company lines (Samsung One UI 6).

The boarding-pass capability is a vendor-described feature, not a guarantee that every pass, device, or region will be supported. Its value depends on whether you use Samsung Wallet and whether the pass and configuration qualify.
Why this does not mean a Galaxy phone is “Samsung only”
Galaxy owners can use Google apps alongside Samsung apps. Samsung’s support material covers Google apps on Galaxy devices, including Chrome, Google Pay, and Google’s Messages app (Samsung support: Google apps on Galaxy devices). In practice, you can choose defaults and build a workflow that mixes the two companies’ tools rather than committing to a single app family.

Google services also integrate with Samsung’s layer. Samsung’s One UI 7 description includes Gemini integration with Samsung Calendar, Notes, Reminder, and Clock; Google’s Galaxy announcements likewise describe Gemini and other Google features on eligible Galaxy devices, including connections to selected Samsung apps (Samsung One UI 7; Google’s Galaxy announcement; Google’s Galaxy announcement). Eligibility and availability depend on the device and configuration, so don’t assume every Galaxy phone supports every connection.
How to decide which apps to use
- Choose around the task. If handwriting and S Pen use are central, assess Samsung Notes on the compatible Galaxy device you plan to use. For other needs, compare the relevant apps rather than deciding by brand.
- Consider where your work needs to go. Think about the phones, computers, accounts, and services you use. A Galaxy-focused feature may suit a device-specific workflow; a Google app may better match habits built around Google services.
- Check the exact device and release. Look up the feature on the model, region, software version, and app version you have or intend to buy. A feature description for One UI 7, for example, should not be treated as proof that it is available on every Galaxy device.
- Try the mixed setup. Since Samsung and Google apps can coexist, you can use Samsung’s tools where Galaxy integration helps and Google’s apps where they fit your broader workflow.
The fair verdict on Google and Android
Samsung’s apps make a credible case that Google does not supply every device-specific workflow users may want from Android by itself. One UI, Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet, and Galaxy integrations add meaningful options, especially for people who use Samsung hardware and services. But the evidence does not show that Google has stopped innovating or that Samsung is universally better. Google continues Android development, and its services increasingly work with Samsung’s apps. The useful question is which workflow fits your devices, accounts, and habits—not which company wins every category.
