Milk supply was reported as largely normal in several Haryana areas on the second day of the October 1–3, 2026, strike, but it was not unaffected everywhere: collection and tanker movements were disrupted around the Sirsa Vita plant. Farmers called the strike to demand higher procurement prices and uniform fat-based rates. The ₹80-per-litre cow-milk and ₹100-per-litre buffalo-milk figures are demands, not confirmed new prices.
What is the Haryana milk strike about?
Dairy farmers and livestock rearers called a three-day strike from October 1 through October 3, 2026. They are seeking procurement prices of ₹80 per litre for cow milk and ₹100 per litre for buffalo milk, along with uniform fat-based procurement rates at Vita plants across Haryana. Farmers say higher fodder, medicine, animal-care and other input costs make dairy farming difficult at prevailing rates. These are protesters’ demands; the available reports do not say Vita adopted them.
Some dairy committees reportedly suspended collection and supply during the strike, and farmers in several villages stopped selling at existing rates. Organisers also sought to stop milk moving from Haryana to Punjab and Rajasthan. Farmer leaders reportedly announced a ₹51,000 penalty and seizure of vehicles used to sell or transport milk during the bandh. Those are claims about protesters’ intended enforcement, not government penalties.
Is milk supply affected?
The reported impact varied by location and by what was being measured: milk arriving at a plant is not the same as milk available to consumers. Sirsa reported disruption and rerouting, while officials in Jind, the Kurukshetra–Karnal–Kaithal belt and Ambala described supplies as continuing largely normally. These are local accounts, not an independently audited statewide survey.

What happened at the Sirsa Vita plant?
Protesters maintained a sit-in outside the plant. Vita officials changed tanker movements: tankers were to be dispatched before 10 a.m. and enter the plant after 4 p.m. Milk was reportedly diverted to chilling centres during Thursday’s disruption, then brought to the plant in the evening and at night. Mehta described the delay this way: “There were some difficulties on Thursday afternoon when vehicles could not reach the plant. They were diverted to chilling centres and brought in during the evening and night after the protest eased,” he said.
Mehta said the Sirsa plant normally received around 78,000–80,000 litres a day and received about 75,000 litres on Thursday. Farmer organisations, by contrast, claimed the blockade reduced daily supply by around 30,000–35,000 litres. Both figures were reported by Hindustan Times on October 3, 2026, as attributed statements; the reports do not reconcile their different estimates. Neither should be treated as a settled, independently measured shortfall.

Why could milk be diverted to chilling centres?
Vita says milk is collected through village-level cooperative societies, chilled at village bulk milk coolers and milk chilling centres, and transported to six milk plants for testing, processing and packaging. That network explains how milk could be held or rerouted when tankers could not reach the Sirsa plant at the usual time; it does not verify how much milk moved during the strike.

Vita’s official page also reports more than one lakh associated milk farmers and 3,514 milk cooperative societies. The page excerpt does not specify when those figures were published, so they should not be read as a verified 2026 count.

What happens next?
The strike was scheduled to run through October 3, 2026. Reports available that day do not establish whether it ended as scheduled, whether the price demands were accepted, or how supply changed afterward. Vita’s contact page lists district milk unions and contacts, including Sirsa.
