How is the course organized?

Is the course free, and do you need to pay for a certificate?
Free access to the OpenCourseWare course materials and a paid edX verified certificate are different things. You can study the course without paying. The official FAQ says edX registration is required regardless of which certificate route you choose, and that a free/audit option with no payment is available during registration. What are the certificate requirements?
According to the CS50 certificate page, you are eligible for a free CS50 Certificate if you submit and receive at least 70% on each course problem and the final project. That is a threshold for every problem and the project, not an average across all of them. CS50 Certificate requirements
The verified certificate offered through edX is a distinct, paid option. The official FAQ notes that deadlines, timing, and certificate processing can depend on the current course year. Who is this course a good fit for?
- Good fit: You want a structured introduction to relational databases, SQL queries, table relationships, normalization, views, and indexes.
- Good fit: You want to learn foundational SQL through hands-on problem sets and a final project, with SQLite first and PostgreSQL and MySQL introduced later.
- Less suitable by itself: You want a broad computer science curriculum rather than a course focused on databases; CS50x covers a wider range of computer science topics.
- Plan ahead: If you need a credential for an employer or another external audience, check what that audience accepts and compare it with the free CS50 Certificate and paid edX verified certificate before choosing a route.
The course page does not promise a particular time commitment or job outcome. Treat it as a way to build and demonstrate course-level SQL and relational database skills, rather than as a guarantee of professional qualification.
