A hardware abstraction layer (HAL) is software that exposes hardware capabilities through a defined interface, so higher-level software can use them without handling every device’s low-level details directly. A HAL is not a physical component, and its role depends on the platform.
What does a hardware abstraction layer do?
A HAL defines a boundary between software above it and hardware-specific implementation below it. Software calls the interface; platform or vendor code implements the operations for the relevant hardware. This lets upper layers rely on the contract instead of directly managing every low-level device detail.
Android describes a HAL as a standard interface for hardware vendors to implement. Its HALs expose capabilities for hardware categories such as cameras and Bluetooth to higher-level platform code. Microsoft uses the term for a Windows kernel-mode layer that hides low-level hardware details from drivers and the operating system. These are platform-specific designs, not one universal arrangement.
Where does a HAL sit?
Conceptually, a HAL sits between software that requests hardware capabilities and the hardware-specific behavior that provides them. An adapter with documented operations is a useful analogy: code above calls the operations, and implementation code translates them into behavior for the particular hardware. The analogy has limits: a HAL is software with an interface, not necessarily one library or component.

On Android, the HAL is part of the platform architecture between framework-facing services and the kernel and hardware side. The communication path varies by interface and implementation. Windows documentation describes its kernel-mode HAL in relation to hardware, drivers, and the operating system; its boundary should not be assumed to match Android’s.
How Android HAL interfaces work
Android hardware abstraction interfaces specify contracts for vendor implementations. Higher-level platform components can use those interfaces to access supported device capabilities without embedding each vendor’s low-level implementation details. The existence of a standard interface does not mean every device offers the same features.

AIDL and HIDL
Android’s documentation says HIDL is deprecated as of Android 13 and recommends AIDL for HALs. Existing HIDL HALs remain supported. This is an Android-specific version distinction; it does not define HAL terminology for other platforms. See the Android HAL overview for the platform’s current guidance.
What a HAL does not guarantee
- Identical hardware capabilities: A common interface does not establish that every device implements every capability or behaves identically.
- Automatic compatibility: Compatibility depends on the target interface and the hardware and implementation that support it.
- One fixed architecture: HAL placement and responsibility vary by operating system and interface.
HAL examples in Android and Windows
| Platform | Documented role | Relevant boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Vendor-implemented interfaces expose hardware capabilities, with camera and Bluetooth among the examples. | Interfaces connect higher-level platform code with hardware-specific implementation; exact paths vary. |
| Windows kernel mode | The HAL abstracts low-level hardware details from drivers and the operating system. | Windows-specific kernel-mode layer; it is not a template for every platform. |
